✊🏾 DO YOU KNOW WHAT TODAY IS? ✊🏾

It's OUR Anniversary.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, the people of Galveston, Texas finally received the news that slavery was over.

Pause and think about that.

Imagine being FREE...and not knowing it.

Imagine someone withholding your freedom.

Imagine people moving to Texas simply to delay telling you that you no longer belonged to them.

MADNESS.

But look at us now.

Talk about a glow up. 💜

Our ancestors were forced onto ships in chains.

Today, we board ships by choice.

We travel.
We celebrate.
We laugh.
We build community.
We create generational memories.
We honor those who made our freedom possible.

That's exactly why Galveston to Greatness means so much to me.

It's more than a cruise.

It's reclaiming joy.
It's celebrating resilience.
It's choosing connection over division.
It's honoring where we've been while sailing toward where we're going.

So here's to our ancestors.
Here's to our freedom.
Here's to our joy.

Black families bought land just to celebrate Juneteenth.
Because many public parks wouldn't allow Black gatherings, communities pooled money to purchase their own land.
Examples include:
Emancipation Park in Houston
Booker T. Washington Park in Mexia
Emancipation Park in Austin
Freedom wasn't just celebrated—it was invested in.

Some enslavers deliberately moved to Texas to avoid emancipation.
Because Texas was isolated and had very little Union presence, many slaveholders relocated there believing slavery could continue longer.
Texas became one of the last strongholds of slavery.

Juneteenth celebrations started almost immediately.
In 1866, newly freed Black Texans celebrated with:
Prayer
Music
Family reunions
Education
Food
Community gatherings
Sound familiar?
We've always celebrated freedom together.
