A Century of Preserving Huntington County’s Story

For 100 years, the Huntington County Historical Society has preserved the stories, memories, and history that make Huntington County special. From pioneer families and canal days to railroad history and hometown heroes, the History & Education Center continues to connect generations through education, preservation, and community pride.

At the heart of that mission is Director Barb Rupley, whose passion for local history shines through every exhibit and program.

“I think the History Center is here to educate the community about the history of Huntington County and preserve that history,” Barb shared. “We are stewards of that history which continues to grow.”

Visitors can explore exhibits featuring General Slack, Huntington’s canal town beginnings, Indian artifacts, the Erie Railroad, and even Sully — the famous dog who roamed Huntington more than 100 years ago. Guests can also enjoy a digital kiosk featuring Huntington history videos, Huntington County Honors, and treasured Rickert Studio photographs.

“By continually sharing our history and encouraging each person to share their history,” Barb explained, “we create a sense of belonging and pride in the history of Huntington County.”

As the Historical Society celebrates its centennial year, the community is invited to join the celebration with commemorative banners, anniversary T-shirts, and the upcoming fun run/walk hosted by the History & Education Center.

In many ways, the museum is more than a place filled with artifacts — it is a place where the stories of our pioneers, ancestors, and community continue to live on for future generations. ❤️
