Free Fishing Weekend is right around the corner, Jan. 17-18, 2026. Whether you are looking to do some catch and release fishing for trout or plan on trying out tip up or jig fishing, here are some things to keep in mind as you head out this weekend:
Ice Safety – No ice is ever 100% safe. The DNR does not monitor ice conditions, but local bait shops and fishing clubs are good sources for current conditions and fishing tips.
Come prepared – Dress in warm layers that are water-resistant, wear sturdy waterproof boots with spike-style creepers for traction, pack an extra hat, extra gloves, a rescue throw rope and ice claws just to be safe.
Release Your Catch Responsibly – In cold temps, it’s critical if you intend on releasing your catch to do so quickly whenever possible, and it’s best if you can release a fish in the hole without exposing it to sub-zero temperatures. If you want to get a photograph or the fish is so big you need to bring it out of the ice hole to turn it around, do it quickly and release the fish gently.
Bait – Anglers are reminded to never release live bait into lakes or rivers. Live bait can carry “hitchhikers,” including aquatic invasive species that are accidentally mixed in with baitfish and may closely resemble the intended bait. These hitchhikers can include regulated species such as mosquito fish and invasive carp species. Releasing bait can introduce these species and associated diseases into new waters, causing long-lasting harm to local waters and fisheries.
But most of all, enjoy your time fishing this weekend!
