The iconic film is everywhere locally this summer! Take a themed souvenir home to commemorate the film’s enduring 50 years. Almost inconceivable in 1975, climate change has warmed our waters and white sharks are now plentiful off our peninsula, having followed seals from warmer climes.

The Jaws movie 50th Anniversary is upon us, and there’re big doins’ afoot on Cape Cod & the Islands to celebrate the iconic film, which was shot largely on Martha’s Vineyard. Film screenings, art installations, and lectures are among the themed events scheduled in our region celebrating the movie and its cinematic impact. Regarded by many to be the first Summer blockbuster, Jaws terrified millions and made fictional Amity Island a household name. Merchandise celebrating the iconic film abounds locally, including this t-shirt available for purchase at Star Market in Harwichport. 🦈🎬

As waters warmed due to climate change an estimated decade ago, seal migration patterns changed and the animals moved into historically cooler waters, including New England. White sharks followed, and activity from roughly April through November off our shores — the Outer Cape in particular — is noteworthy. In fact, in 2024 The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy tagged over 100 white sharks off our coastline in order to track migratory patterns and record related data.

This plaque embedded in the walkway adjacent to the town green hints at his vital role in town history.

Such fun works by an inspiring and prolific local artist ❤️

Artist and musician Winnie Fitch has had
a prolific career spanning decades. Her whimsical commercial illustrations have promoted popular soap and candy companies including Dial and Mars and her playful pieces have graced magazine covers. Having lived throughout the U.S., Ms. Fitch moved to the Cape some three decades into her career where she found additional inspiration in nature and folklore. Some favorite local Fitch pieces concern imaginative interpretations of the sun and merry mermaids, such as this delightful piece showcased in the front window of the Marjon Print and Frame Shop on Barnstable Road in Hyannis.
