This is an excellent study guide for rodeo queens, 4-H members, or anyone wanting to learn more about horses. The author, Dee Dee Tucker, comes from a family of incredibly talented professional rodeo athletes and is an accomplished horsewoman herself. She truly knows her stuff!

I highly recommend this as a resource, especially for all of the newer rodeo queens I know. Many of the horsemanship questions you’ll be asked in competitions can be found in this book, making it a great tool to help you prepare and build your confidence.

Looking forward to this exciting new chapter as the War Bonnet Round Up Royalty Director!

We are so excited to officially introduce our War Bonnet Round Up Royalty Court for 2026, but first, we'd like to introduce the woman leading the way: our new Royalty Director, Shannon Dooley!

Shannon is no stranger to the War Bonnet Round Up. She was a Coca-Cola Cowgirl in the 90s and went on to serve as Miss War Bonnet Round Up for two years in the early 2000s. As a kid, she competed in barrel racing, pole bending, and goat tying during the War Bonnet pre-rodeo entertainment, and she later served as a War Bonnet flag girl. In 2021, the Board honored her as a Legend of the War Bonnet.

Shannon brings years of experience in the rodeo queen world as a competitor, judge, coach, and clinician, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her leading our royalty program.

Our first-ever Miss Rodeo America has headed to Heaven. Marilyn Scott Freimark was born on October 15, 1936 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and made history as the inaugural Miss Rodeo America in 1955 after sweeping the pageant.

The face of our sport four years before we even had our first NFR passed peacefully at 89 on April 4. But not before living a memorable, full life and raising a beautiful family.

At that original Miss Rodeo America Pageant in 1955, which was held in Casper, Marilyn won all three categories of the competition, which included horsemanship, personality and appearance. She wore that first MRA crown proudly, toured the country as our leading lady and rodeo ambassador, and made lifelong connections and friendships with generations of our rodeo family.

Marilyn graduated from Cheyenne High School, and studied business and mass communications at Colorado State University. Beyond our rodeo arena, she was a talented athlete who excelled at tennis, swimming, polo, marksmanship and ice skating. The natural beauty also competed in the 1954 Miss Universe Pageant.

Marilyn married Paul Painter, and they raised four children to love ranching and rodeo like we do near Buffalo, South Dakota. Marilyn later married Dr. Lyle Freimark, in 1985, and made her home in Spearfish.

In honor of her lifelong contributions to our sport, Marilyn was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas. Beloved in her golden years as Grandma M by her own family and young people in many others, Marilyn was a great cheerleader in all sports and aspects of life. I just today learned that professional breakaway roper Joey Williams, who’s a four-time National Finals Breakaway Roping qualifier, is one of Marilyn’s grandchildren. And Riley Routier, the husband of six-time NFR barrel racer Jessica Routier, is Marilyn’s grandson.

The life of Marilyn Scott Freimark will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on April 14 at Leverington Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

My name is Kate Budge, and I am incredibly honored and grateful to introduce myself as your 2026 Miss Rodeo Wyoming.

Wyoming rodeo has shaped who I am, and I am proud to serve as an ambassador for the sport, the state, and the people who make both so special.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way.

Sometimes rodeo queens get a bad rap. People roll their eyes, make jokes, or assume it’s all about sparkly shirts and pretty pictures, but today I watched something that reminded me just how ridiculous those stereotypes are.

I sat and watched my 15-year-old daughter walk into offices and boardrooms with CEOs and GMs of major companies and hold her own. She confidently explained sponsorship levels, outlined return on investment, and carried herself with a level of professionalism that many adults twice her age struggle with.

Not many teenagers can do that. But these are the skills rodeo queening teaches. They learn how to interview, how to think on their feet, how to speak to anyone from a classroom full of kids to a room full of executives, and how to represent their community with grace.

So mock the sequins and big hair if you want, but after what I saw today, I’ll proudly say this: rodeo queening is building strong, capable, intelligent young women who can walk into any room and absolutely shine with or without the rhinestones.

Many of them will grow into the CEOs and leaders the next generation of rodeo queens will one day be pitching to. You won’t be laughing then. 😉
