These photos show the historic flooding we’ve been facing here in Indian River and along our great inland waterways this week. Heavy rains and rapid snowmelt pushed water levels dramatically higher, flooding roads, yards, and many homes along the Sturgeon River, Indian River and surrounding lakes and rivers. Water rose, turning familiar neighborhoods into scenes many of us have never witnessed in our lifetimes.
Yet in the midst of it all, we’re incredibly thankful the Cheboygan Lock and Dam held strong through some of the most intense pressure it’s ever faced. Water got dangerously close — within just inches at times — but dedicated engineers, crews, and responders worked around the clock, reopening the hydroelectric turbine and managing the flow to protect downstream communities.
A huge thank you to:
• The engineers and workers at the Cheboygan Dam complex
• The American Red Cross for opening shelters and supporting families in need
• Consumers Energy teams who stepped up with expertise and resources
• All the first responders, state agencies, local officials, and neighbors helping one another
Your tireless efforts brought relief and hope during a very stressful time.
Most of all, we praise the Lord for His protection over our people, the beautiful inland waterways — the lakes, rivers, and communities we love so much. He has watched over us, kept the dam from failing, and given us strength as a community to come together.
Water levels are slowly improving as of today, but recovery will take time. Let’s continue lifting each other up, checking on neighbors, and being grateful for every blessing amid the challenges.
God bless northern Michigan and all those affected.
