PART 2: Let’s Talk About Currency, Reality, and What You Don’t See Behind the Scenes

Family, let’s go deeper — because there’s another major factor most people don’t realize when looking at pricing…

The currency difference.

Guinea-Bissau operates in CFA (XOF), not U.S. dollars — and this impacts everything. When we plan your experience, we are constantly converting USD into CFA to pay for hotels, transportation, cultural experiences, guides, village contributions, and more.

And here’s what many don’t see:
• Exchange rates fluctuate — meaning costs can increase even after pricing is set
• We often have to convert money in advance, sometimes at less favorable rates
• There are conversion fees, transfer fees, and cash handling realities in a cash-based economy
• Many vendors require payment in full, upfront, in local currency — not deposits

So while you may see a price in USD… behind the scenes, we are navigating a completely different financial system to make your experience seamless.

Also, Guinea-Bissau is not a mass tourism destination. There is no large tourism infrastructure keeping prices artificially low. Guinea-Bissau may be poor (according to western standards) but it is NOT cheap. Everything requires intentional coordination, trusted relationships, and upfront investment to ensure your experience is safe, smooth, and meaningful.

This is what we do:
Bridging two worlds — financially, culturally, and logistically — so you don’t have to.

You won’t have to think about exchange rates, cash access, or how to pay a village elder respectfully in local currency… because we’ve already handled it with care and integrity.

This level of coordination is invisible — but it is essential.

And when you arrive, all you feel is what matters:
Connection. Presence. Home.

If this gave you a new perspective, drop a 🇬🇼 below — I’d love to hear your thoughts or answer any questions.

Family, let’s talk openly about something I know is on many of your minds — the price.

One of the most common questions I hear is: “Why does it cost this much?”

Here’s the truth… this is not a typical vacation you can compare to Google flights and hotel deals. This is a curated return home — and that difference matters.

When you travel with Roots in Guinea-Bissau Cultural Tours, you’re not just paying for lodging and transportation. You’re investing in:
• Direct access to villages and elders — connections that cannot be arranged on your own
• Authentic cultural experiences and ceremonies rooted in tradition, not tourism
• A trusted, on-the-ground network ensuring your safety, comfort, and real connection
• Seamless logistics in a country where travel can be complex without local guidance
• An experience intentionally designed for the diaspora returning home — not spectators

Now let’s put things into perspective…
Heritage and diaspora tours in places like Ghana and Sierra Leone often exceed $4,500+ per person, and many of those experiences are still more commercialized.

What we offer is deeply personal, intimate, and rooted in real community connection — at a price point that reflects both the experience and the impact.

Could you plan a cheaper trip on your own? Possibly.
But you would miss the very thing that makes this journey transformational.

And beyond your personal experience — your presence creates impact. You are directly supporting local families, drivers, guides, and communities, while contributing to real development work in Guinea-Bissau.

Most importantly, you are investing in something that cannot be priced:
Reconnection. Identity. Belonging.

This is not just a trip… it’s a moment many of us have waited generations for.

If you’ve been feeling the call, don’t let price be the only thing that holds you back. Some investments change your life — this is one of them. 🤎🌍

Drop a 🇬🇼 if this speaks to you or message me with any questions — I’m here to walk this journey with you.

GUINEA-BISSAU CELEBRATES TODAY THE NATIONAL DAY OF GUINEANESE WOMEN

30 January is celebrated as Guinean Women's Day It was on this date that one of the legendary Homeland freedom fighters, hero, Titina Sila, disappeared. This date symbolizes the bravery of our heroines who breathe this Nation.

Titina Silá was assassinated on January 30, 1973, when she was driving aboard a canoe over the Farim River, in the northern part of Guinea-Bissau in order to attend the funeral of Amílcar Cabral, also murdered a week earlier, in Guineé-Conacri. Titina's body was never found again.

Titina is one of the Guinean women who fought tirelessly during the National Liberation Fight for Guinea-Bissau's independence.

In honor of the fighter Titina Silá and the other women who gave their lives for the independence of Guinea-Bissau, the date of January 30 has become celebrated, as the Guinean Women's Day or National Heroine Day.

Congratulations to all the women who try their best everyday.

Olá Roots in
Guinea-Bissau Family!

We are pleased to share that several African Americans have received final approval by the government of Guinea- Bissau for citizenship this week. Their names were approved at a recent cabinet meeting. There has not been a formal citizenship ceremony planned or approved by the government yet. However, per our previous communication with representatives from the government. The following steps will be required to complete the citizenship process and receive a passport and Bissau Guinean identification:

1. Passports and identification cards must be obtained within the country. The fees for these documents are currently unknown and are not included in the initial citizenship cost.
2. Each person that has had their application approved by the cabinet will be eligible to receive a Bissau Guinean Birth Certificate. This is the document that will allow you to receive your passport and Identification card.
3. There has been a non-governmental steering committee established to develop a process to aid in the acquisition of official citizenship documentation and potentially plan an informal citizenship ceremony, for those that have been approved. However, those processes are now still in development.
4. Roots in Guinea-Bissau has resources on the ground in Guinea Bissau that are willing to assist until formal processes have been established. If you're planning to visit Guinea-Bissau before these processes are finalized, you can confidently book documentation assistant services with Mario, Yama, and Sufri here:
