Well… We know you’ve been waiting for a piece of the hive’s collective mind with regard to tomorrow’s severe weather threat. Normally, we give you some hahas, but this particular system is no joke. The threat is absolutely there for widespread severe weather. While we’re not going to scream the sky is falling, we STRONGLY urge you to be weather ready and weather aware tomorrow.
SWAG LIGHT: RED
The potential for discrete supercells popping up ahead of a strong QLCS system exists across the state tomorrow. Models are still in disagreement with timing, but a general agreement on initiation sometime between noon and 3pm EDT appears to be the prevailing consensus.
It may feel as though there are multiple rounds of storms as they train from the SW towards the NE - and this threat will persist through the evening and into the early overnight hours before dissipating sometime between midnight and 4am as daytime heating disappears and chokes off available atmospheric energy. We hope that the system loses steam and becomes a congealed rain mess sooner rather than later - but that will remain to be seen.
While the threat of tornadoes, some possibly being strong and long-lived, exists across the entire state, the greatest threat appears to be along and south of the I-70 corridor. If you live in or near Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Vincennes, Bloomington, Columbus, Paoli, Evansville… You’ll want to pay particularly close attention to the weather as it advances through your area.
Again, that does NOT mean that if you live north of the I-70 corridor that you are in the clear. On the contrary, the heightened potential for isolated tornadoes persists all the way to - and beyond - the IN/MI border.
In addition to tornadoes, the threat for ALL severe weather hazards exists! Large hail, winds of 60 - 75+mph, heavy rain, and localized flooding are all likely to be seen.
Now is the time to prepare and make sure you have your safety plans and kits on lock. Make sure you know exactly what county you live in so that you’re able to note which warnings and watches apply to you - and if you’re traveling, be sure to have at least one app that is GPS-enabled and pushes severe weather warnings according to your location.
As always, we strongly recommend that you have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings - and we cannot stress enough how important the ownership of a NOAA Weather Radio is when it comes to ensuring your safety. While we recommend Midland brand radios, a broad variety can be found at your local Walmart, Meijer, Menards, and other big box stores that carry electronics.
We will be live tomorrow morning with a detailed forecast update and our most intimate thoughts about the potential shake down for the day. It will be all hands on deck with chasers out in the field across the state and doing our very best to convey warnings as they come in, along with suspicious radar signatures that catch our eye as potential threats embedded within unwarned storms.
As an aside, if you are an untrained and inexperienced spotter or storm chaser, we strongly recommend that you stay home and stay safe. As always, we ask that you not follow/stalk/harrass any storm chaser, including our team, as we head out into the field. We are not responsible for your safety and do not need the additional stress of an entourage as we make last-minute and split-second decisions while tracking dangerous weather phenomena. We’re not trying to gatekeep, and we love meeting you guys, but our safety - and yours - is paramount.
