September 4, 1826, John Fulenwider, Founder of High Shoals Iron Works died. During the War of 1812 he made cannon balls for the American army. His most important foundry was located in High Shoals, home of the High Shoals Iron Works. (Oct 15, 1756-September 4, 1826).
John Fulenwider, , was born in High Shoals, NC (Lincoln County) on Oct 15, 1756. During the American Revolution, he was a Whig and, as a member of the Rowan County militia, fought at Ramsour's Mill and Kings Mountain. After the war he moved to Lincoln County, where he soon entered the iron manufacturing business.
Fulenwider was one of the first in the area to make pig iron from iron ore. From iron extracted from the rich deposits in Lincoln County. He produced items such as wagon tires, plows, chain iron, horseshoes, nails, and farm tools.
As a result of his industry and resourcefulness, Fulenwider became a prosperous citizen and acquired a considerable amount of property. In 1788 the state passed the "Act to Encourage the Building of Iron Works, which titled 3,000 acres to anyone establishing a furnace operation and tax deferrals. — "every set of iron works, as a bounty from the state to any person or persons who will build and carry on the same.
At his death, he owned at least 20,000 acres of land, most given to him free for building his Iron Empire and he was one of the largest slave owners in the country.
Later The Family operated Lincoln Nail Factory, in High Shoals and became one of the largest nail manufactures in the South.
Fulenwider died September 4, 1826 and buried in High Shoals, N.C.
