Vietnam is not a one-stop trip. Basket boats, river valleys, limestone bays, temples, rice terraces, and a very good bowl of noodles all belong to the same country.

The range is the appeal, but it is also the planning challenge. A coast-and-culture trip moves differently from one built around the north, and adding every famous stop can create more transit than experience.

I start by deciding which version of Vietnam matters most to the client. Then I connect landscapes, cities, food, and time on the water at a pace that leaves room to enjoy them. Good routing matters as much here as the hotel list.

Clients always ask me when to visit Norway. It’s a trick question.

Summer: the midnight sun, fjords carved a mile deep, and the Lofoten Islands, where red fishing cabins face beaches that look borrowed from the Caribbean.

Winter: the northern lights, dog sledding through silent forests, and coastal sailings past snow-covered peaks that drop straight into the sea.

Either way, the new generation of design hotels and fjord-side lodges means you never trade comfort for scenery.

Two Norways, both worth the trip. The only hard part is choosing, and that’s a conversation I’d love to have.

Did you know one of Africa's greatest safaris happens almost entirely on water?

Give me 24 hours in Paris and here’s exactly how I’d spend them:

Morning: coffee and a croissant at a neighborhood café, then the Musée d’Orsay right at opening, before the crowds fill the impressionist galleries.

Midday: lunch in Saint-Germain, then wander the Marais. Boutiques, galleries, and the prettiest squares in the city.

Golden hour: a private boat on the Seine as the light turns and the Eiffel Tower begins to sparkle.

Evening: dinner at a bistro where the menu is handwritten and the waiter argues with you about the w**e. In the best way.

Wrote off Punta Cana as all mega-resorts and swim-up bars? I did too, once. Then there’s this place.

Eden Roc Cap Cana, a Relais & Châteaux property inside the gated Cap Cana community, is built around freestanding suites, most with their own private pool, spread through tropical gardens a short ride from a swimmable, white-sand beach club.

Golfers, take note: Punta Espada, the Jack Nicklaus signature course with eight holes along the Caribbean, is minutes away and consistently ranked the best course in the region.

The practical part matters too. Punta Cana’s airport has nonstop flights from most major U.S. cities, so you can be at the pool by early afternoon.

Borgo Santo Pietro is a restored 13th-century villa in the Val di Merse, south of Siena, surrounded by 300 acres of organic farmland, gardens, and vineyards. Flown recently? Then you’ve felt it. Record passenger volumes, tighter ID requirements, and construction at major hubs have changed the math on getting to your gate. Here’s how I protect my clients from all of it:

I build realistic buffers. Tight connections that worked five years ago don’t work now, especially through the busiest international hubs.

I arrange fast-track and VIP services. Many airports offer expedited security, private escorts, and lounge access that most travelers never hear about. I book them routinely.

I watch your flights. Delays and cancellations get handled while you’re still in the air, not after you’ve landed and joined a rebooking line of 200 people.

And a reminder for U.S. travelers: REAL ID is now required for domestic flights, so check that license before your next trip.

The airport is part of the trip. I plan it like one.

The whole family, one roof, zero hotel hallways. Private villas are how my favorite families do the festive season, and the best ones are booking right now.

A villa solves what hotels can't for multi-generational trips: everyone together under one roof, a private chef instead of restaurant reservations for twelve, space for the grandparents to nap and the kids to run.

Where I'm sending families this year: jungle villas in Costa Rica with monkeys in the trees, catered chalets in the Alps with ski-in access, staffed oceanfront estates in Cabo, villa compounds in Hawaii where three generations can spread out, and private safari villas in South Africa with their own guide and vehicle.

Festive villas require the longest lead time of anything I book. The question worth asking at the dinner table this month: where does the whole family want to wake up this holiday season?

Planning Portugal and only thinking about Lisbon? Allow me to make the case for the north.

Porto is one of Europe’s great second cities, and Infante Sagres is its grande dame.

Opened in 1951 as the city’s first luxury hotel, it has hosted royalty, heads of state, and film stars ever since. The stained-glass staircase alone is worth walking up and down twice.

The location is the other reason I book it: you’re in the heart of downtown, an easy walk to Livraria Lello, the Ribeira riverfront, and the port w**e lodges across the river in Gaia.
