We’re proud to share a new article from FTL Review!

Perfect Day on the Water: Calm Water, Messy Sky

Today is a good example of why I tell people not to plan an Islamorada boat day from a weather-app icon.

NOAA has winds only 5–10 knots with seas around 1 foot, which is normally exactly what I want to see. The catch is an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms today.

So if you were my family, I wouldn’t cancel the day—I’d stay flexible.

From Angler House Marina, I’d watch the radar and actual water, then use the weather windows. If the ocean is clean and the storms give us room, snorkeling is absolutely worth considering. If cells are moving through offshore, I’d keep the day closer to Islamorada and make the sandbar the priority. With September weekday crowds, you can have a completely different sandbar experience than you get during the summer rush.

That’s how I run private Islamorada charters as Captain Jim at Island Adventures. Good conditions aren’t just about wind and waves. Sometimes the smartest decision is knowing where the rain is and where it isn’t.

And if the weather clears toward evening, light winds can make for a beautiful private sunset cruise.

Captain’s Report — Don’t Let the Rain Icons Waste Your Vacation

If I had family visiting Islamorada this week, I’d plan a morning snorkel + sandbar trip and keep the exact route flexible.

NOAA has the local waters staying pretty friendly early this week—generally light southerly winds with smooth to lightly choppy bayside water—but we’re still in September, so showers and thunderstorms can pop up. That doesn’t mean it rains all day. It means I’m watching radar before we leave Angler House Marina and adjusting around what’s actually happening.

This is also one of my favorite times for the World Famous Islamorada Sandbar. The summer crowds are thinning out, especially on weekdays. I’d snorkel first if the ocean side looks good, then spend the rest of the trip at the sandbar. If a storm cell changes that plan, we change with it—that’s one of the advantages of a private Islamorada charter.

Perfect Day on the Water: Today I’d Stay Inside

This morning NOAA has easterly breezes over Islamorada with 2–3 foot seas in Hawk Channel and a chance of showers and thunderstorms. That’s not a forecast where I’d push a family offshore just because they came to the Keys wanting to snorkel.

If you were my family, I’d make today an Islamorada Sandbar day. The bayside and nearshore waters are only running about 1–2 feet, so there’s no reason to beat everybody up offshore when we have great protected water close to home.

September is actually one of my favorite times for this. The water is still warm, summer crowds have dropped off, and weekdays at the sandbar can feel completely different from what people see in July holiday-weekend photos.

That’s how I run private Islamorada charters as Captain Jim with Island Adventures out of Angler House Marina: snorkeling when the ocean earns it, sandbar when that’s the better day, and sunset when the evening conditions cooperate.
