Ask a Local Captain Anything – Sandbar, Snorkel & Sunset Edition

Planning an Islamorada trip? Ask me anything about getting your family out on the water.

I’m Captain Jim with Island Adventures Islamorada at Angler House Marina. I spend my days running private Islamorada charters, so if you’re trying to decide between snorkeling, the sandbar or a sunset trip, I’ll tell you what I’d actually recommend based on your group and the conditions.

Kids? First-time snorkelers? Non-swimmers? Worried about seasickness? Wondering when the sandbar is least crowded or whether the reef will be comfortable that day? Those are exactly the things worth figuring out before you book.

Captain’s Report — Take Advantage of the First Half of This Week

If I had family visiting Islamorada this week, I’d circle Monday through Wednesday and plan a longer snorkel + sandbar combo.

NOAA has light winds and low seas through Wednesday—around 5–10 knots today, becoming lighter Tuesday and Wednesday, with seas around a foot near Alligator Reef. Rain and thunderstorm chances increase Wednesday night into Thursday, along with a little more breeze later in the week.

That means I’d use the good window instead of waiting. Start with snorkeling while conditions cooperate, then head to the World Famous Islamorada Sandbar and spend the rest of the trip in the water. If you can go on a weekday, even better—you’ll usually avoid the heavier weekend sandbar crowd.

Perfect Day on the Water: Don’t Force the Reef

This is exactly the kind of week where I tell people to stay flexible.

NOAA has east to southeast winds around 10–15 knots today with about 2-foot seas in Hawk Channel, then conditions improve heading into Friday and Saturday with winds dropping to 5–10 knots. There’s also a chance of thunderstorms each day.

For me, today is a sandbar day first. The Islamorada Sandbar gives you protected, shallow water without beating everybody up just because you came to the Keys thinking you had to snorkel.

Friday and Saturday are the days I’d be watching for Alligator Reef snorkeling. If the actual water looks good when we get there, go. If it doesn’t, don’t force it. I’ve taken enough first-time snorkelers out there to know that a marginal reef day can turn somebody off snorkeling completely.

One other August reality: keep an eye on the sky. A beautiful morning doesn’t guarantee a beautiful afternoon down here.

Sometimes the Best Charter Is Knowing What NOT to Do

We ran two 3-hour private charters in Islamorada today, and both were good examples of why every trip doesn’t need the same itinerary.

Our morning guests were a dad and his four kids visiting from Pennsylvania. They were concerned about seasickness, so they made the smart call and booked the Islamorada Sandbar—calm, shallow water where the kids could swim and play without spending the morning bouncing around offshore.

After a quick turnaround, we welcomed a family of three from Maryland who had booked a 4-hour snorkel and sandbar combo. They were first-time snorkelers and one guest couldn’t swim. Once we saw the conditions, Captain Jim explained that the reef wasn’t a good choice for learning that day—and the non-swimmer would have spent that portion sitting on the boat.

So we changed the trip.

Instead of forcing snorkeling because that’s what they paid for, we turned it into a 3-hour private sandbar charter, broke out the snorkel gear in the calm water so they could still try it, and refunded the difference.

That’s what local experience and a private Islamorada charter should get you: an honest assessment of the conditions and a day built around your family—not an itinerary we’re determined to follow regardless.

Captain’s Report — Great Week to Do the Combo

If I had family visiting Islamorada this week, I’d put them on a 3 or 4-hour snorkel + sandbar trip, especially Monday or Tuesday.

NOAA has the ocean side around 1 foot today and Tuesday, with east winds generally 5–10 knots. It gets a little breezier and shower chances increase as the week goes on, so I’d take advantage of the early-week window.

We were at Alligator Reef Lighthouse yesterday and the water was absolutely crystal clear. That’s where I’d start: get out in the morning, spend 45 minutes to an hour snorkeling, then head back to the World Famous Islamorada Sandbar to swim, relax and let the kids burn off whatever energy they have left.

That exact 3-hour combo worked beautifully for a family of six yesterday. You really don’t need to spend all day on a boat to experience both sides of Islamorada.

As we get later in the week, I’d keep the plan flexible and watch the radar rather than canceling a day because an app shows thunderstorms. That’s normal August in the Florida Keys.

Miami to Islamorada for 3 Hours on the Water

Today’s trip came together at the last second for a family of six from Israel vacationing in Miami. They decided to make a day trip to the Florida Keys, booked a 3-hour private snorkel and sandbar charter in Islamorada, and we made every minute count.

First stop: Alligator Reef Lighthouse, where they spent about 45 minutes snorkeling in beautiful crystal-clear water and exploring one of Islamorada’s most iconic reefs.

Then we changed gears completely and headed to the World Famous Islamorada Sandbar for another 45 minutes of swimming, playing and relaxing in the warm Keys water.

That’s one of the things we love about a private combo charter—you don’t need to dedicate your entire day to the boat. In three hours, this family went from snorkeling a Florida Keys coral reef to relaxing at the sandbar, with plenty of time left to enjoy the rest of their Keys day trip.

Not bad for a last-minute decision from Miami.

One of Those Days You’ll Talk About for Years

Some days in the Florida Keys are good. Today was absolutely ridiculous.

We started with a family of three from California on a 2-hour private snorkeling charter in Islamorada. Conditions were ideal as we headed toward Alligator Reef Lighthouse, where we spotted a loggerhead sea turtle along the way.

Then things got wild.

A splash. A huge tail whip. Then a massive dorsal fin broke the surface. We were watching a great hammerhead shark chasing something through the water—an incredible encounter none of us expected.

At Alligator Reef, the family grabbed our Sublue underwater scooter and explored the crystal-clear water around the lighthouse, spotting nurse sharks, schooling fish and barracuda.

And Mother Nature STILL wasn’t finished.

On the ride home, we found ourselves surrounded by a huge pod of curious dolphins. Then, back at the marina, a manatee showed up to put an exclamation point on the morning.

After a little pool time between trips, our afternoon family of five from South Florida arrived for a 3-hour private snorkel and sandbar combo. Back to Alligator Reef we went, this time exploring with TWO Sublue scooters before finishing at the Islamorada Sandbar, where the snorkel gear came back out and we found a crab and a live conch.

Loggerhead. Great hammerhead. Nurse sharks. Barracuda. Dolphins. Manatee. Alligator Reef. Sandbar.

You simply couldn’t have ordered a better day in Islamorada.

You NEVER know what you’ll see on the way to Alligator Reef Lighthouse.

We spotted a loggerhead turtle when suddenly there was a huge splash, a powerful tail whip, and then this massive dorsal fin broke the surface. We were watching a Great Hammerhead actively chasing something in the waters off Islamorada.

Five seconds of what turned into one of the wildest wildlife encounters we’ve had all year.
