World Environment Day is a reminder that some of our most valuable ecosystems are often overlooked. Tidal salt marshes protect our coastlines from storms, filter pollutants from the water, store carbon, and provide critical habitat for countless species of fish, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. Preserving these wetlands means protecting the health of our oceans, our wildlife, and our communities for generations to come.

We have semi-diurnal tides here in the Lowcountry. That's a fancy science way of saying we experience two high tides and two low tides each day! When we experience extreme high tides during a spring tide, often called a king tide, that also means weโ€™ll experience extremely low low tides. Those extra-low tides expose vast mudflats, tide pools, and parts of the coastline that are usually hidden beneath the water.

This is NOT a typical reptile we see on the beach. Itโ€™s also NOT a snake, but a glass lizard!
Unlike snakes, glass lizards have eyelids and external ear openings. They can also drop part of their tail to escape predators (a great adaptation in our opinion!).

Remember to give marine mammals their space and donโ€™t change their natural behavior. You never know what they already have planned ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ!
