Not the longest physical roots, BUT ancient etymological roots? The prickly pear cactus has those!
🌵🌵🌵
The scientific name for the eastern prickly pear is Opuntia humifusa. The genus name Opuntia traces back to Opus, an ancient Greek city where a Greek botanist described a spiny plant with edible fruit. Centuries later, this description was thought to resemble the prickly pear, and the name Opuntia was adopted for the cactus genus.

This is a peppermint shrimp! Peppermint shrimp can be found in shallow coastal waters, especially around oyster beds, shell bottoms, docks, pilings, and other structures that give them places to hide. We sometimes even find these tiny shrimp tucked amongst our crab traps!
