The weather has been all over the place this year. Itā€™s done a number on the fall berry crop, but a late summer punctuated by bursts of monsoonal moisture, might yet salvage some the fall leaf season.

Some Aspen groves have definitely shut up shop and dropped their leaves early, but there is hope the more robust ones will put on a show

This photo shows an older grove on the right has not weathered early summer the drought while the younger trees on the left are still holding their leaves.

It had the makings of a wonderful sunset in the Lamar Valley last night, but the pinks never quite came in!

We have an Australian coming to Yellowstone this month. Heā€™s looking for some strenuous hikes. So today I reconnoitered Heart Lake (15m return) and added Mt Sheridan which would take it to 24m.

That should do the trick. šŸ¤žšŸ»

Only saw 3 people all day. Heart Lake is the gateway to the Thorofare: the remotest place in the lower 48, and unique among most Yellowstone hikes in that you feel alone.

On Sheridan there were living white bark pines, but sadly a grove of newly dead ones with rust-colored needles still on them. One photo shows a dead trunk with pine bark beetle bore holes and a living white colored trunk behind it.

Oh, and bear s**t on the trail at 9,700ft. Moose and elk droppings even higher so I wasnā€™t alone, just making plenty of noise to avoid an unwanted encounter.

Itā€™s that time of year again: . Thanks to the dry winter this yearā€™s harvest is a little thin, so this fall some hungry bears might end up looking for food where they shouldnā€™t

But this one was focused on the right spot, even if it almost fell on the wildlife brigade vehicle which was there to stop visitors ending up on .

I took the bear awareness course over the weekend. Even in the artificially favorable circumstances deploying a deterrent was challenging: the word awareness in the course title was key. (While I understand the logic of having a fi***rm in your bear defense toolbox, I didnā€™t shoot because Iā€™m too busy to invest the time to become good enough at it to realize any advantage in the field with a bear charging at me.)

Itā€™s been a hazy week in the Tetons due to the smoke from the Spokane wildfires. No doubt, disappointing for people chasing the dawn alpenglow at Schwabacher Landing or Mormon Row, but there have been some colorful sunrises and sunsets, and we are thankful our homes are not piles of ash

At the risk of dipping my toe in the ever-simmering culture warsšŸ˜¬ ā€¦

Rangers fishing the sign for ā€œChinese Springā€ out of the namesake spring near Old Faithful yesterday. Perhaps someone took exception to the name which is steeped in stereotypes or as the park service puts it ā€œcomes from an instance in past park history of international visitors doing laundry in the spring when it erupted and threw their clothes high into the airā€.

Whatever your opinion on the merits of the name or this response to it, letā€™s at least agree throwing the sign or anything into the spring is a bad thing to do.
