While a guide and good optics certainly increases your odds, luck plays an important role in wildlife viewing. Spotting a newborn pronghorn fawn required being in the right place at the right time.

I signed up for a Grizzly Bear Defense Workshop for the end of May. Priced at $150, much cheaper than a similar course in Bozeman, I thought it would be tough to get a spot, but last night I got notice that is was cancelled due to low enrollment.

Carrying easily accessible bear spray is great. Having some experience actually using it better. I can only think that people don't know about this: Hopefully the hunting-conservation divide is not self-selecting people out.

If you are into bear conservation, having a bear associate humans with flaming nostrils and watering eyes can only help keep it out of trouble. Not to mention saving you from a beating in a tight spot.

It might be too late for this spring, but if you are interested in a course like this contact JH Shooting Experience and get on the waiting list for the next one.

A wonderful, informative and thought provoking day at the Northern Rockies Conservation Cooperative’s biennial Conservation Symposium yesterday. Our own Cami Burke cami.burke was one of the organizers and our Founder Trevor Bloom tetontales
was one of the 6-minute quick talk presenters.

Attached is a sample of some of the research that was featured. Sorry, limited to 10 photos

First Grizzly of the season. Spotted it on the way back from Dubois, WY, but still got some nice shots with only my phone. It looked in good condition and was likely a young sow or boar as sows with cubs are not out of their dens yet.

Not much feeding, it was walking parallel to highway US26 and made an attempt to come down as if it wanted to cross the road, but a big rig came around the corner and spooked it so it retreated back up the hill. I suspect a big experienced old boar would not have been so skittish.

I hope it’s caution served it well, and it got across safely.
