What's going on with these antlers?

This is a rare sight: a peruke rack. Instead of hardening and shedding velvet each fall, the antlers keep growing as a lumpy, velvet-covered mass that never drops off.

The cause is hormonal. Antler growth runs on testosterone, which rises each fall to harden the antlers and strip the velvet, then drops in late winter so they cast. When an animal can't produce that testosterone surge, usually from testicular injury or disease, the antlers get stuck in "grow" mode. Given his testicles look primed for the rut rather then injured, it’s likely to be a problem with testosterone production

That's why both antlers are affected here. Most antler deformities show up on just one side, typically from an injury to the soft, growing antler while it's in velvet. When both sides are abnormal like this, it points to something happening throughout the whole body, like hormones, rather than a single bump or break.

So does a lopsided or velvet-covered rack hurt a bull's chances in the rut? Almost certainly. Antlers are a bull's main tool for sparring with rivals and holding a harem, and a big, symmetrical rack generally signals a healthy, mature animal in his prime. Cows tend to gravitate toward those dominant, loud-bugling bulls, so a bull with antlers stuck in velvet, and the low testosterone behind them, is unlikely to be doing much breeding.

Nature is full of surprises, and that's half the fun of being out here.

The weather has been all over the place this year. It’s done a number on the fall berry crop, but a late summer punctuated by bursts of monsoonal moisture, might yet salvage some the fall leaf season.

Some Aspen groves have definitely shut up shop and dropped their leaves early, but there is hope the more robust ones will put on a show

This photo shows an older grove on the right has not weathered early summer the drought while the younger trees on the left are still holding their leaves.
