Golden hour in Prague. 🇨🇿

A beautiful view down Havelská toward Havelské tržiště (Havel’s Market), with the twin green towers of the Church of St. Gall rising behind it.

The warm evening light against those dark clouds was pure Prague.

Look who we ran into while walking around Prague today — Janek Rubeš from Honest Guide! 🇨🇿

If you’ve ever researched Prague on YouTube, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Janek. Honest Guide has become one of the best-known Prague travel channels, helping visitors discover the city while also warning them about tourist traps and scams.

We’ve followed his videos for years, so randomly bumping into him today in Old Town was a pretty cool Prague moment!

First meal in Prague! 🇨🇿🍺

We stopped at Restaurace Mincovna right on Old Town Square.

And for anyone trying to pronounce it: Mincovna = “MIN-tsov-na” — that Czech c has a “ts” sound.

Cold Czech b**r, hearty soup, sausages, mustard, and fresh bread. A pretty good way to start another visit to Prague!

✈️ And we’re off!

Settled into Iberia Business Class for the overnight flight from Boston to Madrid. Lots of buttons, a few almost-secret levers, lie-flat seats… and Cathy is right across the aisle from me.

A pretty comfortable way to begin our European adventure. Next stop: Madrid, then Prague! 🇪🇸🇨🇿

🦞 1 DAY TO GO! ✈️🇪🇺

Some traditions you just don’t mess with.

Whenever we have an overnight stay in our USA gateway city of Boston, standard procedure is a trip to the Mount Vernon Restaurant for their two-lobster dinner! 🦞🦞

It has become part of the trip itself — one last New England feast before heading home from Europe.

Tomorrow the adventure begins: Boston → Madrid → Prague! 🇪🇸🇨🇿

Travel Tip: City Cards — Convenience vs. Value

City travel cards sound great on the surface. One price gives you local transportation, museum admissions, and sometimes discounts at attractions.

But before buying one, do the math.

In many cities, these cards are expensive enough that you need to visit a long list of included attractions just to break even. And that can turn a relaxed vacation into a race to “get your money’s worth.”

We usually prefer to pay for transportation separately and then buy admission only for the places we actually want to visit.

City cards can be very convenient. But convenience and value are not always the same thing.

Travel Tip ✈️

Avoid Euronet ATMs when traveling in Europe.

They’re everywhere in tourist areas, but they can hit you with poor exchange rates, added fees, and confusing currency-conversion offers.

Instead, look for an ATM owned by a real local bank. When the machine asks whether you want the withdrawal converted into U.S. dollars, choose NO and let your own bank handle the exchange rate.

A little planning can save you quite a bit of money over a long trip.

Bank ATM = good.
Euronet = keep walking.

3 DAYS TO GO! 🇪🇸✈️🇺🇸

One of the ways we make complicated European trips easier is by using gateway cities.

For this trip, Madrid is our European gateway. We’ll fly into Europe through Madrid on the way to Prague, then work our way across Central Europe before eventually returning to Madrid for our flight home.

On the U.S. side, Boston serves the same purpose. Instead of trying to force every international itinerary through Jacksonville, we position ourselves in Boston and connect to the better long-haul options from there.

It opens up more flight choices, can make business-class awards and fares easier to find, and gives us much more flexibility when building a multi-country trip.

So this journey has two bookends: Boston on the American side and Madrid on the European side.

And in just 3 days, it begins! 🍺✈️🌍

4 DAYS TO GO! 🇪🇸

A little Don Quixote country!

These windmills are in Consuegra, Castilla-La Mancha, not far from Toledo. This is the landscape made famous by Miguel de Cervantes, where Don Quixote charged at windmills he imagined were giants.

Spain is full of places where history, literature and the landscape all come together — and this one is definitely going on our list.
