A Marble Moment for your Wednesday!
One of Pickens County's most iconic landmarks, the Tate House, stands as a testament to the extraordinary beauty and legacy of Georgia marble. Built between 1921 and 1926 by Colonel Sam Tate, grandson of marble pioneer Stephen Tate, the mansion was constructed using rare Etowah Pink Marble quarried right from the hillside behind the home. Colonel Tate carefully selected matching pieces of the distinctive rose-colored stone as they emerged from the quarry, creating what would become one of the most unique marble residences in the United States.
Known today as the "Pink Palace" and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Tate House showcases the marble industry that helped put Tate, Georgia, on the map. The same marble-rich mountains that fueled Pickens County's economic growth also provided the material for this remarkable estate, preserving a beautiful chapter of our community's marble story for generations to enjoy. While no longer a private residence, the Tate House has found new life as one of North Georgia's premier wedding and special event venues. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, fountains, and centuries-old trees, it welcomes guests from across the region who come to celebrate!
