On October 6, 1924, the State of Missouri dedicated the new Missouri State Capitol after the previous building was destroyed by a fire in 1911. Crowds from all over the state gathered to celebrate New Capitol Day with an extravagant parade and pageant.

Visit Jefferson City, Lincoln University - Missouri , and the Etta & Joseph Miller Performing Arts Center are thrilled to announce the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) has selected Jefferson City to host the State Theatre Championships from 2027 - 2031, and the Speech and Debate Championships from 2028 - 2031. Both competitions will take place during the third week of April each year.

The MSHSAA State Theatre Championships and the Speech and Debate Championships bring Missouri’s top high school performers and speakers together for a statewide competition. Students compete in a variety of events showcasing their talent, preparation, creativity, and communication skills.

The theatre competition will take place over a two-day period at the Miller Performing Arts Center and Lincoln University campus and is estimated to bring 1,500 students, coaches, directors, and volunteers. The speech and debate competition will take place during the following two days at Lincoln University and is estimated to bring another 1,500 students, coaches, volunteers, and judges to Jefferson City.

In addition to the State Theatre Championships and the Speech and Debate Championships contract, MSHSAA also extended the State Track and Field Championships in Jefferson City for another year, continuing the contract through 2031.
