It’s an honor to finally share my mural at the Columbia Regional Airport. Completed as a series of panels pieced together (one is also hanging post-TSA), this piece brings together some of my favorite things about our slice of the Midwest and frames the information station right next to the baggage claim.

Inspired by the intersection of nature and industry in the midwest, this mural highlights the many elements that make Mid-Missouri feel like home. Cheers to Hermann’s wine country, the harvest of culture at the Lyceum in Arrow Rock, the intrigue of Fulton’s Brick District and the rich history of Blind Boone playing Ragtime in downtown Columbia. The piece was designed with the past in mind – highlighting the joy that resonates in the local energy and ages into a Midwestern Americana nostalgia.

Viewers are encouraged to imagine the experience of the state’s bird, the Eastern Bluebird, which soars over farmland and industrial feats. To be in Central Missouri is to be constantly inspired by where we’ve come from and where we’re going.

This painting was completed in Luther Johnson’s backyard in central Columbia with the help of Joni the Border Collie. Physical labor courtesy Sam Johnson, the artist’s loving husband.

Today, we are happy to announce a new Archives Flickr album dedicated to the Jeff City visit! Our staff were on hand to photograph this historic visitation celebrating America250 and watch history as it unfolded right outside our door.

The Flickr album (linked below) features three photographs of Big Boy’s 2021 visit to Jefferson City and 51 pics of the 2026 visit. Photograph shown here taken by Erika Woehlk.

Did you take pictures of Big Boy on its journey through Missouri? If so, please consider donating your favorite image to the Show-Me America250 Time Capsule! The link below explains how to make a submission.
