🏜️Trail Tuesday🏜️
This spiral formation towering over the Red Rocks Trail is a pure Yasso Formation — gypsum-rich sandstone named for "yasso," Spanish for gypsum. Only about 10% of its original gypsum is still there; the rest weathered away ages ago. These layers are younger than the Obo Formation nearby, formed when groundwater seeped through loose sand and slowly cemented it into solid stone.

A whole geologic story, one hike away. Tag a rock nerd who needs to see this. 🪨

🏛️Museum Monday🏛️
Every August 2nd, Jemez celebrates one of our Feast Day's, honoring Saint Persingula and the history of the Pecos Pueblo people who joined the Jemez tribe generations ago — bringing livestock as a gesture of gratitude for being welcomed. It's a tradition still passed down today, right down to the kids who reenact the Pecos Bull in the plaza, learning their culture by watching, listening, and playing.

Come learn the full story at the Walatowa Visitor Center museum, then join us in person this Sunday, August 2nd, to witness Jemez Feast Day for yourself. Everyone is welcome.

🏛️Museum Monday🏛️
Jemez pottery in the colonial era tells a story of resilience. After the Pueblo Revolt (1680–1700), Jemez oral tradition holds that religious leaders banned the production of polychrome pottery and many traditional designs — a deliberate choice to keep these cultural expressions out of Spanish colonists' hands. Only small numbers of plainware cooking vessels and Jemez Black-on-White, especially olla jars, continued to be made. Some 17th-century pieces even took on Spanish forms — soup plates, cups, chalices, candle holders — while carrying the culture forward. See the pieces and their story up close in our museum.

🏛️ Museum Monday 🏜️
This week's Museum Monday spotlight: Jemez Black-on-white pottery. First made between 1250–1350 AD, this style is identified by fine-lined, geometric patterns resembling nearby Santa Fe Black-on-white — carbon paint made by boiling Rocky Mountain beeweed down to a black gel. It's part of a distinct Jemez ceramic tradition that continued through the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and beyond.
