Chiaroscura is a design studio. We use elements of light and shadow to orchestrate a bit of poetry into the spaces we create.

Chiaroscura strives to design spaces that stir sensory experiences and stoke the memory & imagination. Our name comes from chiaroscuro, a technique of juxtaposing light & shadow to compose the semblance of a three-dimensional whole.

We also had a launch yesterday :) Our 2nd semester with yet another neighborhood public school at PS3.

Our young learners played a “Guess-a-Sketch” game, identifying iconic architecture from around the world and learning how to distill complex geometrical forms into quick hand-sketches.

Special thanks to the many members of the PS3 team for their support in helping me bring this program to their school community.

Frank Gehry — the end of an era, but endless inspiration.

The Wiggle Chair was born out of a young architect experimenting with an everyday material and a craft knife to create an iconic design that was simultaneously sculpture + structure. Eventually, produced by furniture maker, Vitra.

The scale changed, but the experiments continued in a career that spanned over six decades. Frank Gehry went on to design the Vitra Design Museum in Germany; Dancing House (aka Fred and Ginger) in Prague; Guggenheim Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall — each time changing the definition of “what is architecture?” RIP!
