Tucked deep in Hickory Run State Park, Boulder Field is one of those places that feels almost supernatural to Pennsylvanians who stumble upon it for the first time.

A vast, treeless expanse of rocks stretching nearly 400 feet wide and 1,800 feet long, it looks like something left behind by giants but it’s really the handiwork of ancient glaciers. Thousands of years ago, ice sheets crept through the Poconos, cracking and tumbling the bedrock into this frozen-looking sea of boulders. What’s wild is that nothing grows there. The rocks have kept the soil from forming for centuries. Generations of locals have hiked out to it, hearing the stones clatter underfoot and feeling like they’re standing in the middle of prehistory.

For Pennsylvanians, Boulder Field isn’t just a geological oddity, it’s one of those quiet, eerie places that remind you just how old and mysterious this state really is.
