Jill loves gear. Loves backpacking videos. Loves learning. But at some point, watching turns into wondering ~ and wondering turns into, āMaybe itās time to test myself too.ā
This year, Jill turned 65. She drove hours from near the PA/NY line because she has bigger dreams on her heart ~ including hopes of one day completing a flip-flop hike of the AT.
Like many hikers, she also has obstacles. Previous knee surgeries and IBS are two of the big ones. Trails teach us something every single time we step onto them, and this trip brought plenty of lessons.
Jill chose to use a bear can for this trek and quickly learned what many backpackers eventually discover ~ those cans can add a lot of weight! Unless required, a food bag may be in her future.
Food was another concern. Backpacking burns a lot of calories, and food can be a sensitive area because our bodies need fuel. Sometimes people bring too little ~ Jill went the other direction and packed a few extra snacks. Personally, Iād rather see too much food than not enough.
We had a little rain, a beautiful evening at camp, and lots of smiles. Jill never complained. Not once. She simply kept going with a wonderful attitude.
We had hoped for more miles, but after 6 trail miles, Jill decided that was enough for this trip.
And that is completely okay.
Backpacking isnāt about proving something. Itās about learning, growing, and taking the next step ~ whatever that step looks like.
Iām honored she trusted me to help guide her on this journey, and I have a feeling this is only the beginning for Little Red. š
