Today, East Tennessee feels a little quieter.

We mourn the passing of Dolly Parton, not simply a beloved musician and entertainer, but one of our own. Born in the mountains of East Tennessee, Dolly carried the stories, humor, resilience, music, and generosity of our home with her wherever she went.

She showed the world that our mountain heritage was something to be proud of. She turned stories of humble beginnings, family, hard work, faith, heartbreak, and hope into songs that became part of the fabric of American life. And as her fame grew, she never seemed to forget where she came from.

Her legacy reaches far beyond music, especially her lifelong commitment to children and literacy. Dolly gave countless people a little more hope and a little more opportunity.

For those of us who work every day to preserve the history and stories of East Tennessee, Dolly’s life feels especially meaningful. She understood something we hold close: our stories matter. Where we come from matters. And there is power in remembering.

We are grateful for the music, the laughter, the kindness, and the stories she leaves behind.
