Three Sisters Falls is located in the southern district of the Cleveland National Forest near Descanso, about an hour east of San Diego. Accessed from the Cha’chaany Hamuk Trailhead
This hike is best known for its three-tiered waterfall that cascades into clear, rocky pools below. In the spring (especially after good rain), the falls are flowing beautifully and the canyon feels wild and alive.
The trail is well maintained — but don’t let that fool you. You descend first (which feels easy)… but the climb back out is steep, exposed, and demanding. This is not a casual stroll, especially on a warm day.
We made our way all the way up to the top pool and took a dip — cold, refreshing, and completely worth it. There used to be ropes to help hikers access the upper section, but those have now been removed.
Preparation here is everything. Bring more water than you think you need. Start early. Wear proper footwear. And always check the weather before you go. Flash floods are a real danger, and sadly, on average one person per year loses their life on this trail due to heat, dehydration, or not being properly prepared.
This is a beautiful hike — but it demands respect.
On this occasion, we took our time heading down, cooled off in the top pool, and paced ourselves on the steady climb back up.
Perfect backcountry challenge with a wild reward at the end.
