Dear Voter: When I first started attending School Board meetings and reading the notes of other meetings I couldn't attend, I had no intention of ever running for the school board. However, after reading through years and years of notes and attending meetings some of the meetings during the last several years, I started to see a real problem. I saw a Board that was very disconnected from the District that it is supposed to represent and was not very transparent.
A couple years ago, I started a group to encourage people from all walks of life to participate in our government processes. I feel strongly that it is our duty as Americans to participate, to volunteer and to work to make our cities, counties, state and nation better. And I feel strongly that when we participate, we will make our communities better. So, I realised that unless I get involved, I will be stuck with the mediocre situation that we are currently in. Mediocre maintenance of the buildings (resulting in the District's current assessment that $50+ Million in work is still necessary AFTER the current bond $$$ is spent) and average report cards from both the Oregon Department of Education and US News and World Reports.
Our current School Board members and Superintendent want to blame the lack of maintenance of our schools on the voters (for not passing enough bonds over the past 20 years), despite the reality of the $20+ Million annual budget (not including bond money). The schools have more $$$ then our citizens (per capita) - the average family of four in our district has $50,000/year while the school district has over $52,000 for every 4 children - and yet we are constantly told that the schools never have enough. That is a serious disconnect between the district and the people. The reality of the Superintendent's 25+ year tenure and the current school board members who are up for re-election after over 15 years is that their mismanagement of the school's money has left our buildings in disrepair and our students getting average educations! I think, as I am sure that you do, that we can do better for our children!
Another example. The School Board voted unanimously to put forward a bond in May 2016. After voting to put forward the bond, the school district spent close to $100,000 in time and $$$ pushing that bond, despite the fact that the bond WAS NOT addressing the District's #1 priority, Laurel Elementary. Despite all that $$$ spent on pushing the bond, only 29% of the District's voters voted "Yes" on the bond. 25% voted "No" and 46% did not vote at all. So, 71% of the District did not agree with the unanimous School Board. Meanwhile, Laurel Elementary is put off another 5-8 years.
I am bilingual. Yo hablo Ingles y Espanol. I speak English and Spanish. I have been working on budgets and bookkeeping since 2002 when I moved back to Oregon. I currently own The Courtyard on Sixth in Junction City and am a land developer. I attended Springfield High School and graduated 5th in my class of about 450. I got 2 Bs. I took a full ride scholarship. I was Student Body President of my middle school at Hamlin. I was Student Body President of my High School. I was Student Body Vice President of Communications at BYU. I was captain of the Basketball team, the Track team, the Choir and I lettered in drama :) I did great in college until my brother died after his junior year at JCHS. After that I didn't do so well in college. I did manage to graduate with a degree in Communications with significant course work in Business and Spanish. The reason I mention this is because I want you to know that I have worked very well with teachers and school staff my whole life. For every opportunity to be President I had, there was a teacher or adviser right there helping me along! I am a volunteer coach a couple seasons a year. I volunteer with the Scouts and Cub Scouts. Since college, I have been self-employed. I learned the hard way how to stretch a penny and have managed projects worth millions of $$$. I have 6 beautiful children who make Brenda and I very happy and who, despite persistent rumors to the contrary, have attended all our district schools! :)
I don't expect perfection from anyone, but I do strive for excellence and will strive for greatness in our community, schools, in our families and with our students! Under our current leadership (in the last 20+ years), the education our children receive has deteriorated right along with the buildings that have been left without maintenance. We need a new, united effort to stop the decay!

My name is Jeremy Moritz and I am running for the Junction City School Board. I am a husband and father of 4 children. All four currently attend the Junction City School District. I have been a part of Junction City and Harrisburg all my life. I’ve coached little league teams and have tried to be a part of events and activities as time allows.
I have served over 6 years on the Board of Directors for a Non-Profit Organization in Eugene. I currently am the Executive Director of that Organization. I have and continually am blessed to serve so many different business over the years. In that, I have had many conversations and insight on needs and issues that affect them daily. The challenge I constantly face is, “what can I do to help?”
I am running for the School Board for 5 reasons: to bring problem solving, accountability, transparency, common sense and leadership back to the community, teachers and students. I believe that anybody who has been in public service too long tends to bring apathy and lack of good positive direction. If new ideas or leadership isn’t freshly diversified, then true problem solving, true accountability, true transparency, true common sense and true leadership is thrown out the window. These five values must be present for everybody in order to be successful and to move forward in a positive direction. I believe it is my duty as a citizen to not just talk about issues, but to be actively involved in the decision making process.
Over the years, I have seen the culture of our schools change. This is due to many factors, but a major factor is the culture that our school board sets. This is why strong leadership is very important. I tend to believe heavily on family values, integrity, honesty, respect and leadership. All our kids need these values. Someday our kids of today will be our leaders of tomorrow. I would like to see our kids not only prepared academically, but also socially with these characteristics. If we are to expect these values to be implanted on our kids, then it is equally important that our School Board and staff share these same values. Our society must be built on young people who are informed, educated, honest, respectful and have integrity. Then and only then will we be able to produce not only good leaders, but great leaders.
I am committed to do all that I can to bring accountability, transparency, common sense, leadership, integrity, honesty and respectfulness to the position I will hold as a member of the Junction City School Board. I am also committed to making the School Board Meetings a safe environment for all to be heard in order to make good and informed decisions based on what our community needs.
I would appreciate your vote in helping me make Junction City Schools the best that we can offer to our community, our teachers and our students.
Thank you,
Jeremy Moritz

Samuel Doman
Junction City School Board Position #2
I pledge;
Honesty, and a common sense voice for the parents and the taxpayer. I am a new candidate running for the board. My opponent has served many years on the board and I appreciate his volunteering! I am hoping that Voter's agree with me that it is good to get some more people involved, which is why I am running. Please vote by Tuesday May 16 and share this!
As you know the voters decided to pass a $20 million dollar bond measure and I pledge to see that every dollar goes as far as we can make it go to ensure Junction City School district teachers have the resources they need to help our children reach their potential.
I come from a family of educators and my father served on the school board for 8 years and I feel the need to give of my time and talents to serve the community. I will also have two children in Junction City schools this fall and I want to do my best to help them have a great educational experience. I feel like the board could use a fresh voice and new perspective moving forward.
I stand for fiscal responsibility and common sense. I believe that government is meant to serve the people not the other way around, and that goes for public schools as well.
I am including a short resume of myself because I feel I am applying to be the voice of the parents and community members.

Please vote by Tuesday May 16 and please share this!
I am one of 4 NEW candidates running for our local school board. I appreciate the long hours our current school board has volunteered over their past terms. My opponent in this contest has served for 20 years! I think it is time for some new ideas on the board and am asking for your vote!
My name is Brenda Gambee and I am running for the Junction City school board. I am a wife and a mother of 6 children. Our children have attended Laurel Elementary, Territorial Elementary, and Oaklea Middle School. We have also hosted 3 foreign exchange students over the years that have attended Junction City High School and look forward to hosting more in the future. This school year, we elected to homeschool our children through a public charter school.
I have heard skepticism about a homeschooling mother running for schoolboard. Those gripes are as wrong-headed as they are foreseeable. Taxpayers don’t need to have children in public schools to formulate good ideas about how to improve the schools they help fund. That logic would rule out young adults with pre-school children or none at all, middle-aged parents whose children are out of school and grandparents whose children don’t even live in the area. All of those types of people have different perspectives that could be valuable on any school board.
 I have a true passion for education; I spend over a hundred hours each and every month working with other volunteer teachers and parents to teach children.
 I will support teachers and programs that help to create a safe learning environment, including suspensions. I do not look at children as “butts in seats” to get more funding. I believe that teachers being able to create a safe learning environment where they will be backed up by the board will instinctively draw families to our schools. In our home, respect and behavior come before books.
 I support parents. No more guilt! Parents need to be supported. These kids are not just dollars for the district. The district’s #1 goal should be what is best for the child, even if that means the child does not attend this district. Over 200 kids that are in our district are finding alternative education outside of our district. . That’s close to 15%. Sounds like some needs are not being met. Are we listening to parents? When I withdrew my youngest son because I knew as a mother that he was not ready for all day kindergarten I was given a lecture in which I could have contradicted every argument made. If we want children back in our district then we need to be working on communicating with them. I support alternatives. If a parent does not feel like their child’s needs are being met/heard and they are willing to step up and make the sacrifices -which often times means living on one income, teaching your own child, driving to another school, doing hours and hours of research needed to help their child -then there should be no guilt trips given at the district office. I support parents and their involvement in or out of the schools. I believe that parent groups are key to a school’s success and should be well supported by the school board as they are supporting the schools so well. If and when a parent comes to get their form signed to remove their child it is essential that healthy communication is used. Why are the child’s needs not being met? Find out if it is because, maybe the child was hit in the head with a thrown pencil by another child that continues to have outbursts in class? Is the child bored and need to be moving ahead quicker? Was an agenda pushed onto their child? Was a child being treated inappropriately by other children? Is the family a family of faith and feels like if Christ isn’t invited into the school then they don’t want their child there either? Let’s build bridges not burn them down!
 I feel that our district is over using Public Relations. We don’t need to just hear what sounds nice and fluffy on the ears but we need to know the truth, the whole truth! Transparency is a must. There needs to be more open discussions at board meetings. Opportunities for the community to respond to things being discussed at the meetings not just “non-agenda items”.
 I believe that it is our duty as citizens to be involved and I am willing to do so. I am willing to devote the time and energy needed.
 I am a big advocate for respect and I am committed to being respectful to others no matter how different our opinions may be. I’m not afraid to make decisions or to stand up for what is right while at the same time being able to truly listen and see others perspectives and accept the will of the majority.
 Lastly, I know that communication is huge and I am willing and able to be transparent. If we want to be teaching kids morals and values, then it is essential that our Superintendent and schoolboard have those values and morals and do their best to live them.
The mission I have is shared with many in our community. One of vision, of unity, community and success. My goal is to bring the community back together to work together to reach that high level of education our students deserve. I believe in our educators, parents and students in that they will help the Junction City School District to be one of the best in the state instead of where we are currently ranked, which is unranked.
