From left to right, this is Kahala, May, and Shannon. But let us not get too far ahead of ourselves. Two weeks ago, my daughter Cora called from Cordova to ask if I needed a dispatcher. "Heck yes!" was my response. She has dispatched for us most days since. Last year, I dispatched for four pedicabs while giving pedicab tours. Sometimes, I spent 30 minutes of a tour dispatching, which meant I extended the tour quite a bit. I'm sure it still made my tour less enjoyable. This year, I will have five pedicabs running. Cora will earn her pay. Well, Cora has taken the job very seriously. She has a whiteboard with magnets labeled with all the pedicabbers' names. She uses it to track when we are giving tours, sneaking in a lunch, or are broken down. She has maps of the city, lists of common destinations, and an outline of our tour stops. She combines all those things to ensure our customers get maximum enjoyment and service from our pedicabs. Yesterday, Shannon called for a lift for herself, May, and Kahala. Cora answered and suggested they might enjoy a half-hour pedicab tour of the city followed by being dropped off at their desired destination. Shannon and Co. liked the idea, so I picked them up, took them around town, and delivered them to their destination. When I was dispatching and pedicabbing, I didn't have time to care for people or even explore their needs. Cora, in two weeks, is already a better dispatcher than I ever was.

Two super fun things to share.

First - Carrie L Edwards set up a pedicab tour for Evan and Jasmine, her son and his wife. They visited Juneau on Monday, via the EURODAM. I asked them to try to get off their ship early and — lo and behold they were the first one’s off! They were ready before I was ready. I found them pretty quickly and off we went on our pedicab tour. We had a lot of fun, but I couldn’t convince them to stop calling me “sir!” I love that I can take my high school classmate’s kids on tours. I know from their age, one day soon I’ll be taking around my classmates grand kids. Now, Carrie, don’t go getting excited. The grand kid thing is just a general hope. It has nothing to do with your kids.

Second — Chris had his first day as a Pedicabber, yesterday. He definitely has the right attitude about the job and its generosity. He put away after a very good half day. At 2:00 a guy ran up to me and said Chris had given him a lift, but the guy had forgotten his wallet on the ship. Chris had said, “no problem, just do someone else a favor to pay me back.” The guy had seen me near his shop and chased me — running — all the way to the Tram, about 1/4 of a mile. He gave me the money, while catching his breath, and asked me to give it to Chris. He wouldn’t let me refuse it. He said, “I almost caught you several times, when you slowed to chat with people, but then you’d speed off and I couldn’t yell, because I couldn’t catch my breath.” What a trooper. I offered him a free lift back to his ship, but he wouldn’t take it.

This is a great job!

Jim and Maryanne Bellaire came to Juneau on a cruise ship and I had the pleasure of taking them around town and then having lunch with them. We had tons of fun.

When he told me they were coming in September, I considered suggesting they come earlier, but the weather was great for their visit

I learned lots about their life, living the mobile life of a mobile home resident sounds very interesting

I met Jim at Yorktown in 1999 at Aids to Navigation School. For years we competed for the same jobs and worked together to make the Coast Guard a better place. Hard not to become friends in that kind of situation. In 2008 I really wanted Coast Guard Cutter HOLLYHOCK on the Great Lakes. The detailer awarded me the cutter SYCAMORE in Cordova, Alaska, instead. Guess who got HOLLYHOCK? That is right…

It couldn’t have worked out better for either of us!

Thanks for visiting and thanks for lunch!

I don’t know which e-bike acquisition I’m more happy about. Easiest to say I’m stoked about both. On the left is my new pedicab. Thank you Nunska for selling me your sweetheart Coaster! And for transporting it from Spokane to Seattle, for me.

On the right is my new-to-me Kona El Kahuna e-bike. I got a steal on it from Cycle Alaska. It has been part of their rental fleet since 2022. It had 780 miles on it and the battery seems like new. All my pedicabs are cadence sensor motors. The El Kahuna is a torque sensor, so it helps more when it feels me mashing the pedals. Riding it is a rush. I paid $1000 for it and they have at least five more across the small, medium, and large spectrum. Run in and test ride one if you are curious.

Today we have a gale force storm in Juneau. I’m catching upon paperwork and posting on FB

Last March, Judi called me to arrange a ride from the Seaplane Dock to Wings Airways for 7:30 am. I exolained that the ride would cover only 200 feet. She insisted the ride was necessary and she had ridden with my son a few years back. Rarely do I hit the docks before 9:00 am, but I would do it for her. At 7:30, I was there, but Judy and Barbara couldn’t get off the ship.

As I waited a woman walked past my pedicab holding an excursion ticket. I said “Hello amd Welcome!” Ahe spied the passenger seat of the pedicab and asked if she could sit there. I told her she could sit, but I wouldnt be able to take her anywhere because I was waiting for a customer. She sat, pulled out an inhaler, took two puffs off of it, and narrowly avoided an asthma attack. I got to hear all about their upcoming whale watch, as she recovered. Im glad she was okay and that she was comfortable asking for what she needed.

At 8:10, Jusi and Barbara made it to me. They were scheduled to fly with Temsco to a nearby glacier and meet a dogsled team. The ship they arrived in had sounded its fog horn every minute as it transited Gastineau Channel, in the fog, so I doubted their excursion would happen. They didn’t need to meet the tour operator until 8:30, so I took them to get coffee. Judi bought me a coffee at The Grind. I drank it as we pedaled back to the meeting point.

Their helicopter was canceled due to low visibility. The kicker is that the full refund wouldn’t be received for two to three business days, so they were not feeling rich.

Barbara wanted to see whales, so I took them to meet up with Kyle to arrange a whale watch. Kyle offered them such a good price, I offered to pay their way, but they wouldn’t let me. So I took them to see “Takhu,” my pet whale. They loved the statue and the fountain. I told them about Chief Kowee, the two old women who canoed beneath the glacier, Joe Juneau and Richard Harris, as we pedaled back to town. We had a great time.

They asked where I had planned to get breakfast, which spurred me to take them to The Rookery. Breakfast was fabulous. I had eggs benedict, Judi had the ham bowl, and Barbara had oatmeal cookies. Judi insisted on buying me breakfast and I was glad to let her.

Next on the list were some grocery items, so we went to IGA. I stayed with the bike and got to chat with lots of Coast Guard friends, while the ladies shopped.

Our last stop was the Salvation Army store, where they scoured the place for bargains. I called Anjuli, in Northern Ireland, and told her how much fun I was having with them. She asked what I might charge them. I said I planned to comp them the whole thing. I’ve had such a wonderful summer and here I had a sunny day in September with two women who reminded me so much of my own mother…

They made me give them my Venmo information and grilled me for what my charges would be, but I got away clean. Judi tried to pay me today, but I insisted she pay it forward. I have no doubt she will.

The best is she told me our pedicab tour and our time together were the best part of their cruise. I LOVE hearing that!

As a bonus I dropped them off and picked up Jim Bellaire and Maryanne and got to take them around. I’ll post about that tomorrow

Lisa Goodson Simondsen is a travel consultant for D Tours and Travel.

I first met her in 2017 when I had the privilege of taking her and a friend around Juneau in our pedicabs. My tours didn’t have names back then, but we had lots of fun and exchanged information.

On Monday, I saw she was in Ketchikan and I wondered if I would get to see her. Yesterday morning she asked how many pedicabs I was running and when would be a good time for her to rent all three for her customers. We settled on 4:00 pm and we did a modified 5-Star City Tour with Takhu the whale thrown in.

I got to take Lisa and Bill around, while Kadin took Tina and Barb, and Rob took Lynne and Jim around. The nine of us toured as a group and we had a blast.

In 2018, Lisa and Bill hosted my cousin and me as we traveled the country in an RV. My cousin and I had a blast and didn’t pass many disc golf courses on our way to Florida.

Yesterday started with a 9:00 am phone call from a couple needing a lift into town. I was taking care of some home projects, but I told them I could head in and take them into town at 10:00. At ten, I found them and we headed toward town. They asked about the Five-Star City Tour and decided to take it!

I finished up with them at 11:30 and got a cup of coffee. I didn't want to get tangled up with customers because I had an annual date with Tom and Julianna to celebrate their 32nd anniversary. This was the fifth time we'd gone around on their anniversary. It has never rained on us on any of the five trips we have taken, and yesterday was beautiful. We started at the tram and went up Main Street to the Capital Building. From there, we headed to Cope Park, where we enjoyed a picnic lunch of salmon salad sandwiches, followed by two games of bocce.

Rob called me as we were finishing up a game to tell me he had landed a double and that he'd like me to help him with it. Tom, Julianna and I headed back to town, but not before checking out Takhu, the whale statue. We always have fun, but yesterday was exceptional!

After dropping off Tom and Julianna, I met up with Rob and his crew. The six of us headed to the USS JUNEAU memorial. Lots of people were hanging around the memorial, but we worked our way around them and I invited them to listen to my story, detailing the ship's history and its legacy.

Four years ago, Kevin Dugan and I met a woman named Louise Martin who lost her dad, Fred Martin, in 1942 when the JUNEAU sank. Back then, Kevin and I lowered the U.S. flag from above the memorial, folded it and presented it to Louise, in memory of her father.

Guess who was one of the people who listened to my story yesterday. Louise asked if I was James? She also asked after Kevin. As we left, she gave me a hug, I wished her well, and asked her if she intended to come back next year. She said she would. I hope I run into her, again...

Isabel and Gonzalo approached to ask about a lift to see Taku the whale. I explained their options and they chose a historic tour along the way. Two pedals in, we —almost literally — ran into her daughter and grandsons, who also wanted to go along. I called Kadin to assist and raced over to pick up Veronica, Joseph, and Sebastian. Off we went.

We discussed our respective lives and connections to our homes. Gonzalo and Isabel are celebrating their 50th anniversary!

When we got to the whale park, I worried a bit, because the fountain feature of Taku cuts out when winds are above ten mph. The winds felt right on the edge of that, so we waited and I explained lots of fun facts about Taku. I was explaining how the winds cutout works and its purpose, when water started spraying from Taku’s fins. Shoo! What a relief.

On the way back, we stopped to explore the war canoe and the Entrance Totem. Kadin and I got to meet two more family members, who’d walked out, along the way. Joseph and Sebastian showed they had no fear as they explored the war canoe in ways I’d not seen before. I checked the anemometer on the pier and it said 9.8 mph!!! Edgy!

I exchanged jokes with Isabel and Gonzalo on our way back to the ROYAL PRINCESS. Kadin took everyone else to the Fudge Company.

I feel so fortunate to have a job where I get to know so many wonderful people over the course of each day!

A few weeks back, I received an email from one of my favorite people: Cathy Crispino. Cathy was my choir instructor at Sumner Academy. She invested a lot of time in my training and got very little reward for it. I don't think this conflict affected very many people, but, in Kansas, the State Choral Festival and the State Wrestling Championships are always on the same weekend. We all have to prioritize some things over others, and, in my family, athletics trumped music.

Anyway, Cathy told me her good friend, and fellow choral music teacher, from U.S. School District 500 (Kansas City, Kansas), would be coming to Juneau on a cruise, and she wanted me to take her around Juneau on a Five-Star City Tour.

Patrice Sollenberger contacted me almost immediately. She was excited to have her Juneau port call plans set. Together, we worked through worries about rain and logistics and decided we would meet at two o'clock to start our tour. She also brought along her good friend Shiela Campos, a retired fifth grade teacher from the Bay Area.

I called them as I headed downtown and arranged to meet them in front of the Alaska Shirt Company. We loaded up and were off. The weather was typical for Juneau: "Cool with rain, heavy at times." So we used the rain shield and a full sized blanket, to keep dry and warm. The microphone and speaker combination performed flawlessly inside the rain cover, and Patrice and Shiela adapted quickly to yelling to me, so I could hear them, as we rode through town.

We covered war history, indigenous history, fishing, mining, saloons, civil rights heroes, sampled and purchased yummy fudge, examined Juneau's capitol building, and met up with Juneau's favorite dog. Interspersed were a few well timed "dad jokes." Shiela took a post tour stroll through the Red Dog Saloon, and we finished with hugs at the Alaska Juneau Dock Shuttle.

Patrice and Shiela are already making plans to come back. I hope they have as much fun in Skagway, today, as they had in Juneau.

If I'd known how much fun was in store for me, I would have massaged my smile muscles in preparation. I always enjoy taking people around Juneau, but being able to connect with people who know and understand the place where I grew up is super special.

To Cathy Crispino: Thank you for making this happen. I love you!
