Department staff hosted Palm Beach County’s Manatee Law Enforcement Grant Program Kick-off Meeting last month. The meeting, attended by nine local law enforcement agencies, included manatee mortality and injury statistics, grant program guidelines, and information on the county’s manatee protection plan. Manatee season started November 15 and ends March 31. During this time manatees travel throughout the county’s coastal waterways, particularly Lake Worth Lagoon and Loxahatchee River. Boaters, remember to follow posted speed limits and keep an eye out for these gentle giants. For more information about manatees in Palm Beach County, check out http://discover.pbcgov.org/erm/Publications/Manatees.pdf.

What's for breakfast? If you ask this great blue heron, it could be anything from fish to frogs to baby alligators. That wicked-sharp bill is good for grabbing a meal hiding among the wetland vegetation. This great blue heron was photographed at Pondhawk Natural Area in Boca Raton. You can also find them at Pine Glades, Cypress Creek, Limestone Creek, Winding Waters, and Frenchman's Forest natural areas. For more information about these sites, visit http://discover.pbcgov.org/erm/Pages/Natural-Areas.aspx.
