When Does Maui Have the Best Weather?

10/10/2015

We'll Maui has some of the best weather in the world. So don't let the threat of rain discourage you.

It's difficult to give a general answer to this question because Maui is so diverse. But here are a few thoughts. In general, the rainy season runs from late November thru March. Often the rain is of the scattered showers type; but sometimes (rarely) one can experience days of steady rain.

It also depends on where in Maui you have in mind. It rains most in the mountains. In fact some of the wettest spots on the planet can be found in Maui where it rains nearly every day. No worries, though, since these rains occur where you would never go.

It rains more in the Hana area (but don't let this discourage you...Hana is super)!

On the west side, it rains more in Kapalua than in Kaanapali, but ditto above.

The weather is driest in the Wailea area.

Heat is not an issue. Summer is a great time to visit Maui. It almost never reaches 90 degrees F and humidity is nothing like southeastern US.

Cold isn't a big deal either. Nighttime temperatures rarely reach into the high 50's.

Trade winds can be an issue (especially in the summer) but they're delightful...and always come with good weather.

Where's the best place to see some of the world's best surfers?

There are numerous super surf spots throughout Hawaii. So sometimes it depends on the weather and sea conditions.
But 2 spots we like on Maui are Hookipa (near Paia) and Honolua Bay. Hookipa is a top tourist spot, so we won't bother to give directions here. Just ask anybody.

Honolua bay, however, is a bit less traveled. But it's a great location because you can view the surfers close up from an excellent vantage point. Magnificent views of Molokai are thrown in!

To get there, drive north past Kapaula. Go past the Plantation Golf course. You will see a couple of paved viewing spots to the left, but keep going. Shortly after, you will see a dirt road off to the left. It goes through an old pineapple plantation. You will see lots of cars parked off to the side. Find a spot, walk to the edge of the cliff and enjoy!

If you wish, strike up a conversation with some of the surfers. Generally they're quite friendly and like to talk about their sport.
