Metalwork Merit Badge class for a few Scouts this past weekend. I designed a class that met all of the metalwork badge requirements. After a safety talk, tool and forge intro, we discussed metals. Both ferrous and non ferrous and how they react to heat and force. Then we learned the science behind iron and steel as well as what is happening during the hardening and tempering process while heat treating steel their own center punch. All this lead to the main project of slingshot from a rail road spike. In the future this class will utilize a parent as an assistant to the Scout.
Slingshots turned out great!
