This year’s Ironman World Championship is on Saturday, October 10th in Kailua-Kona. Men and women will race together on the same day for the first time in seven years. Arrive early to watch the 2.4-mile swimming event, which starts at the Kailua Bay seawall at 4:30 a.m. A good place to view the 112-mile bike ride (7 a.m. to 2 p.m.) is at the intersection of Palani Road and Kuakini Highway. Watch the 26.2-mile run (2 p.m. to midnight) on Ali‘i Drive, where athletes transition from the bike to the run and where the finish line is. There will be a free watch-and-wait event at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Resort back parking lot that features covered seating, live big-screen broadcasts, food trucks, and a cash bar. A plate lunch and a long table can take you right back, can’t they? Back to family drives, packed Sundays, and places where the menu hasn’t needed to chase a trend.

This old dining room has that lived-in feeling that only comes with decades of serving the same community. The wooden walls, the no-nonsense setup, and the steakhouse style cooking all feel rooted in another time, when a meal out was an event and not a decision made on an app.

And that’s part of the charm. You sit down, you look around, and you can just tell plenty of stories have been told here over coffee, dinner, and dessert. I’m glad places like this still have a place in the day.
