Today is Nēnē Awareness Day 🪿

For those of you who don’t know, the Nēnē is the Hawaiian State Bird. They are unique to the state of Hawai’i and are not found anywhere else. Compared to other geese, nēnē are more terrestrial and have longer legs and less webbing between their toes, which likely facilitates walking on hardened lava.

One of the reasons the nēnē is at risk of extinction is because of people feeding them. This can be intentional, sharing food to attract them, or unintentional, leaving food waste or cat food outside. Another risk is habituation. With the nēnē getting comfortable around humans, there have been higher counts of people hitting them with their cars.

With the approaching storm, we are continuing to monitor the changing weather conditions. Islandwide and statewide news forecasts often describe impacts broadly, meaning it may or may not reflect conditions in our specific operating area.
