It's going to be fun...

It's almost time for the historical reenactment of the Shooting of Sheriff Whitney, featuring the Ellsworth Cowtown Dancing Girls! This year the reenactment will be at Preisker Park, before the concert.
Please be advised, this is a historical reenactment that does depict the shooting of a law enforcement officer, as well as features portrayals of Old West saloon girls.

It's going to be fun!!!

A Group of Pawnee Scouts that were discharged from Fort Harker were ambushed by Soldiers, Volenteer Infantrymen, and settlers during the Mulberry Massacre. During the battle the Pawnee Scouts took shelter in a cave located northeast of Fort Harker on Mulberry Creek in Ellsworth County. Doctor Fry, the military surgeon at Fort Harker, ordered the skulls of six fallen Pawnee Scouts be recovered by solders and brought back to the Fort for crainiologic study. The remains of the six Scouts were returned to the Pawnee Nation from the Smithsonian and repatriated in the 199O's. The repatriation of the Six Pawnee Crainium, taken from around the cave, set the precedent for the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act

The northern banks of the Smoky Hill River in Central Kansas was the southern boundary of Pawnee territory. "The Tribe then, as it is now, was composed of four distinct bands: the Chaui “Grand,” the Kitkehahki “Republican,” the Pitahawirata “Tappage” and the Skidi “Wolf." (Pawnee Nation website) The Pitahwirata band of Pawnee once lived throughout the Smoky Hill Region. The Pawnee Scouts served in the United States Military during the Indian Wars from 1864-1872 throughout the central plains including Fort Harker.

We found these pictures of Fort Harker Field throughout time. Our search for more historic photoes of the town growing around old Fort Harker and the people who lived here, is turning into a pictorial history of Kanopolis. Now all we need is more pictures.

Amber M. Thille stayed at the back during the Deliverance River Run Float down the Smoky Hill this weekend to make sure we didn't lose anyone. She also stayed the night on the River Bank to gaurd the kayaks and Canoe for day two of the float. She took these pictures of the launch and kept an eye out on Eisen Glass hunters that stopped along the way.

There were all kinds of things happening during the Deliverance River Run Float Down the Smoky Hill. I can't wait to do it again. We started Mother's Day at Fort Harker Field with a Yoga session with Lisa Schegel from Hays Kansas. Then we headed out to the Smoky Hill. We had lunch on a sandbar and made a quick stop at Faris Caves before we got out at Strally's Rocks.
