REAL ID UPDATE – Don’t Panic!
There’s been a lot of confusion lately, so let me help clear things up:
YES – you can still get a REAL ID after May 7, 2025.
You just won’t be able to use a regular driver’s license to board domestic flights or enter certain federal buildings after that date.
What does that mean?
If you plan to fly within the U.S. or visit places like military bases or federal buildings, you’ll need either:
• A REAL ID (gold star on your license)
• A valid passport
• A military ID or other approved document
If you don’t fly or visit federal buildings, you’re fine to wait.
You don’t need to rush to the DMV today. The offices are packed because people think May 7 is a deadline to apply—it’s not. It’s just when TSA starts checking for it at airports.
How to get a REAL ID:
Visit your local DMV or Revenue Office with the right documents:
1. Proof of identity (birth certificate or valid passport)
2. Proof of Social Security (card, W-2, etc.)
3. Two pieces of mail proving your address
Pro Tip: Go to your states DFA site for a checklist before you go
BOTTOM LINE:
You can still get a REAL ID after May 7. Just don’t wait if you need to fly or go somewhere that requires it.
