We've had a few questions about why we canceled tours today, so we wanted to share the data.
The Wailua River gauge reached 194 cubic feet per second today, a dramatic increase from normal conditions of around 30 cubic feet per second. While the river may not always look dangerous from a single viewpoint, rising water upstream affects river current, trail crossings, water quality, and overall safety throughout the route to Secret Falls.
As guides, we monitor river conditions continuously—not just the weather outside our window. When conditions reach levels where we can't confidently provide a safe and enjoyable experience, we cancel. Even if it’s last minute. Real time decisions are made to avoid real time emergencies.
The river has finally begun to recede this afternoon, but today's graph shows exactly why we made the decision we did.
We know cancellations can be frustrating, especially when you're on vacation, but we'd rather disappoint someone with a refund than put guests or guides in an unsafe situation.
Mahalo for your understanding and for trusting us to make the right call when Mother Nature has other plans. 🌧️🌿🚣
