📍Wailua Bay — a storied shoreline
In ancient times, Wailua Bay wasn’t just a scenic stretch of coastline—it was the primary port of entry to Kaua‘i. This sacred shoreline served as the first landing for voyagers, high-ranking chiefs (ali‘i), and revered deities who shaped Hawaiian history and myth.
According to oral traditions, Wailua Bay welcomed Mo‘ikeha, a legendary chief and navigator whose arrival marked the beginning of a prominent chiefly line on Kaua‘i. Later stories tell of Kaweloleimakua, his descendant, and Hi‘iakaikapoliopele—the beloved sister of the fire goddess Pele—whose travels brought her to this very shore.
Beyond its spiritual and political significance, Wailua Bay is also home to storied surf breaks like Makaiwa, Ka‘oha‘ala, and Kalehuawehe, which were favored by ali‘i and warriors for recreation and training.
To stand at Wailua Bay is to stand where history met the horizon. Every wave carries echoes of ancestral voyages, sacred ceremonies, and the daily rising sun that has greeted generations past.
