We recently took Hawaii chapter leaders out on a mission to clean gold balls off the reef outside and where iconic holes near the ocean lead to a significant debris field.
We collected 390 gold balls between the two sites!!! These have an impact on the ecosystem in several ways…
-these golf balls are barely negatively buoyant, so when there’s surge from surf thy are easily tossed around the ocean floor, damaging all kinds of organisms by way of physical impact.
-also, we saw several balls with bite marks taken out of them, meaning they are contributing to microplastics in the food chain.
It is important to limit the amount of man-made debris in the ocean. You can do this by 1) being conscientious about where your belongings go, 2) participating in clean-up efforts, and 3) supporting good causes and organizations 🤙🏼
