We wanted to share this information from the Hawaii Visitors Center with our guests that may have been hearing the news about Maunaloa.
Recent news of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) monitoring Maunaloa volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi should cause no reason for travelers to alter their travel plans to Hawaiʻi Island at this time.
🤙 Maunaloa is not erupting and there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time.
🤙 The USGS volcanic alert level remains at advisory (yellow).
🤙 There is no reason at this time for travelers to change or alter their leisure or business plans.
🤙 Maunaloa is located on the island of Hawaiʻi and last erupted 38 years ago in 1984.
🤙 All flights into Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole (KOA) and Hilo International Airport (ITO) are operating normally.
🤙 All accommodations, activities, and attractions on the Big Island are also operating normally. As a precautionary measure, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has closed the Maunaloa summit backcountry until further notice. Maunaloa Road and Maunaloa Lookout at 6,662 feet elevation remain open to the public.
🤙 Air quality on the island of Hawaiʻi remains unchanged.
