The bad news? 🌧️
You checked the weather forecast for your upcoming Mexico vacation...and there's a rain cloud EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. 😭
The good news? ☀️
Don't panic just yet. Rain in the Mexican Caribbean can be incredibly localized and short-lived. A forecast showing rain doesn't necessarily mean it's going to rain where you are...or that you're in for an entire day of rain.
You could get a downpour, grab another margarita, and be back in the pool an hour later. Cheers!
The even better news? 🎉
If you DO end up with a rainy day, you're in luck that you're in Mexico, because there are some pretty incredible things to do that don't require perfect weather.
Here are my 10 things to do on a rainy day in the Mexican Caribbean
1. Explore an underground cenote 💦
Rain? What rain? Head underground! Try Aktun Chen, Río Secreto, Dos Ojos or Mayamar for caves and cenotes where sunshine isn't required.
2. Get muddy at an adventure park 🌿
Don't automatically cancel your park day! Many activities still operate in the rain...and ATVs and ziplines can be even more fun when you're already getting wet. Always check before going, as activities may pause for lightning or severe weather.
3. Take a Mexican cooking class 🌮
Turn the rainy afternoon into tacos! You'll find cooking classes in Cancún, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
4. Check out SFER IK 🎨
Part art gallery, part architectural experience, SFER IK is one of Tulum's most unique places to explore. There are two locations: Tulum beach road and Francisco Uh May.
5. Visit Museo Maya de Cancún 🗿
Right in the Hotel Zone, this museum has an impressive collection of Maya artifacts and exhibits covering the history and archaeology of the region.
6. Get ridiculous at the 3D Museum 📸
Playa del Carmen's 3D Museum of Wonders is indoors and filled with interactive optical-illusion artwork made for some pretty hilarious photos.
7. Have a spa day 🧖♀️
Take advantage of your resort spa, or head into Playa del Carmen, where you'll find tons of spas and massage spots at much lower prices.
8. Go shopping 🛍️
Try Marina Puerto Cancún, La Isla, Quinta Alegría, or GO Grand Outlet Riviera Maya. Many areas are covered, so you can shop between the raindrops.
9. Have a vacation photoshoot 📸
Your photos don't have to be cancelled because of rain! Resorts have gorgeous lobbies, covered walkways, restaurants and tropical covered spaces that can make great backdrops. DIY it with friends or book a professional.
10. Go to the movies 🍿
When all else fails...popcorn! Cancún and Playa del Carmen have modern cinemas showing movies in Spanish and English. Just check whether your showing is in Spanish or subtitled before buying tickets.
