On a quiet farm outside Kearney, Missouri, the outlines of the outlaw legend a lot of people only know from movies started as a real childhood in a real house. 🌾

Jesse James was born on this farm in 1847, and the property stayed in his family for generations after he became one of the most wanted men in the country. Over the decades, the stories around him grew far past whatever actually happened, tales of buried gold, secret tunnels, and a Robin Hood streak that historians say was mostly invention, spread by dime novels eager to turn a violent bank and train robber into folk hero material.

The farm is preserved today as a museum, and the house itself, along with the family cemetery where James was originally buried, still draws people curious about where the myth and the man come apart. Most visitors leave with more questions than answers about which parts of the legend were ever true to begin with. 🕰️

Do you think outlaws like Jesse James became folk heroes because of what they did, or because of the stories people told afterward?
