The view from Alaska
Today we had to drive to Anchorage. As we approached the city, we looked up and saw a B2 flying in perfect formation with fighter escorts. Pretty amazing to see. From the timeline, they were inbound to the activities on the ground at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). Once in the city, we saw localized rallies both opposing and in support of the President and Ukraine.

Even though we are the largest state in the nation, I didn’t think international politics would land on our shores and thrust us in the spotlight. In fact, I really hoped we’d be able to leave politics behind by moving to such a remote area. But alas….the best laid plans…. 🙄

(And yes, I have definite opinions on all of this, but will keep them to myself)

The timbers were flying today on this picture-perfect Alaska day!! The crew got most of the timber frame for the foyer and great room stood up today. There will be more timbers in the master bedroom and kitchen, but a few more walls have to be built before they can be stood up. She's definitely taking shape! What do you think?

Walls are going up! The outline of the house is more visible now, and work is underway staining all 25,000 lbs of timbers! The crew is beginning to assemble the timber frames and the crane comes next week to stand them up! The timbers are big and Alan says they are HEAVY -- and that's saying a lot coming from Alan!

We had an unplanned additional construction project, but when the sun shines, you make hay!

We had the opportunity to purchase steel pilings for a seawall, so we were able to add 275' of seawall to our existing 235' seawall. This adds protection to the lot where our new house will sit; previously only the lot with the cabin was protected. The tides can be brutal here and erode the bluffs, so having a strong seawall is critical. This had been on our "to do" list, but here it is now, all done!

(I won't mention that we have another 500'+ of Cook Inlet frontage that still isn't protected, but that's for another day!)

Wow, so much has happened on the house front! The subfloor is in, the garage foundation has been poured, and our timbers arrived! Yes, those timbers came all the way cross-country from Ontario, Canada! More developments to report on other fronts, but I'll update those in the coming days. For now, enjoy our house progress!

When the local Three Bears food market has a huge three hour meat sale — so big the local radio station is there broadcasting — you have to stock up!! We got ground beef (we actually had to wait while they ground it), rib eye steaks, wagyu steaks and roasts, beef ribs, pork ribs, and a huge pork tenderloin. I think we need a bigger freezer!!

Majestic eagle perched on top of our spruce tree right on the bluff. Likely surveying the Cook Inlet for a tasty snack!

I took a picture at this same spot on Tern Lake years ago, and it has been the screen saver on my phone ever since. I took this picture yesterday, on our way home from Seward. I guess Alaska has been calling me with her siren song for far longer than I thought. So happy to be an Alaskan resident!!

Fantastic day in Seward!
Last year's men and women's winners of the Mount Marathon race also won this year. The woman, Klaire Rhodes, completed it in 50.31 minutes and the man, David Norris, completed it in 42.30 minutes! These runners are beasts!! Did I mention that 900 runners competed in girls, boys, women's, and men's groups?

Seward is such a stunning town. It sits right on Resurrection Bay and is the gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park. We took a short stroll through the harbor, which is where we used to fish for salmon and halibut, and got another good view of Mount Marathon.

What a super 4th of July this was!

Mt. Marathon Race!!
Beautiful day in Seward for the Mt. Marathon race. 3000 ft of vertical climb! The female winner completed it in under 51 minutes after sliding (deliberately) on the ice field in the way down. The men’s race starts in a a half hour.

Happy 4th of July! May you celebrate on this Independence Day!
