Great story!

In 1913, the United States Golf Association held the US Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Harry Vardon and Ted Ray came from England. Vardon had already won six Open Championships. Ray had won one. Between them, they represented the very best professional golf had to offer. Their presence in America was considered something of a favour to the local game, which was still finding its feet.

Nobody gave the American field much of a chance. Golf in the United States at that point was largely a gentlemen's pastime, played by wealthy men at private clubs who had picked it up after watching the British do it.

Francis Ouimet did not fit that picture.

He was 20 years old. He had grown up in a house literally across the street from the course. He had caddied there as a teenager to earn money for the family. He qualified for the Open at the last minute. He hired a caddie of his own: a 10-year-old local boy named Eddie Lowery, who reportedly refused to let anyone else carry the bag regardless of what was at stake.

After 72 holes, Ouimet had tied Vardon and Ray. In the 18-hole playoff the following morning, he beat them both.

The American press went wild. The story went everywhere. A kid from across the street, with a child on his bag, had just changed what golf in America was allowed to believe it could be.

Ouimet never turned professional. The 1913 US Open remained the defining moment of his career and one of the most important afternoons in the history of the sport.

Before Tiger. Before Arnie. Before Hogan. There was a 20-year-old ex-caddie from Brookline who lived across the street.
