Before the first passenger steps onto the dock, they’re already there. Ropes in hand. Eyes on the water. Fuel lines checked, floats wiped down. Beavers, Otters, Super Cubs and Cessnas meticulously eased into place.

The best island weekends start in the air. A 45-minute scenic seaplane flight out of Seattle and you’re touching down on San Juan Island, direct into orca country and island time. Morning at Lime Kiln, scanning the water for fins. Afternoon at Roche Harbor, wandering the docks and trails. Evening in Friday Harbor with delicious dining options. And when the day’s done, Friday Harbor House waits with a view over the harbor worth the trip alone.
