Great news for Southeast Alaska travelers and locals! 🚢✨
The Skagway ferry terminal is officially back in service following structural repairs to the docking facility.
Thanks to round-the-clock efforts by engineering teams, divers, and contractors, critical repairs—including concrete stabilization and anchoring chain replacements—were completed to safely restore operations.
Key updates for travelers:
⚬ Ferry Service Restored: Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) operations have resumed servicing the Skagway terminal.
⚬ Travel Connections: Regular maritime transit between Skagway, Haines, and neighboring Inside Passage communities is back up and running.

SKAGWAY FERRY TERMINAL REPAIR UPDATE (September 8, 2026)

Significant progress was made at the Skagway Ferry Terminal over the weekend, with crews completing repairs to all 19 anchor chains securing the terminal float.

On Monday, Hamilton Construction re-set the vehicle transfer bridge and passenger gangway, and electricians are on site restoring power to the float. The float and bridge are well aligned, and crews will continue monitoring float movement to determine whether any final adjustments are needed.

The terminal remains on track to reopen for ferry service on Thursday, September 10, pending completion of the remaining work and final operational checks. Hubbard and LeConte schedules will be updated accordingly from September 10th onwards.

This has been a substantial repair effort, and we appreciate the hard work of the crews, engineers, contractors, and AMHS staff who have worked together to safely restore the terminal.

Skagway Ferry Terminal Repair Update (September 4, 2026)

Repair work at the Skagway Ferry Terminal continues to make steady progress.

DOT&PF Marine Engineering staff are returning to Skagway to monitor the remaining anchor-chain installation and support the final phases of repair work. Additional replacement chain is expected to arrive shortly, allowing crews to continue installation of the remaining components needed to secure the terminal float.

Once the anchor-chain work is successfully completed, crews will move toward resetting the vehicle transfer bridge. Additional work will then be required, including restoring electrical connections and installing pedestrian safety components before the terminal can return to service.

While significant progress has been made, the terminal will remain closed until the remaining repairs are completed and DOT&PF engineers confirm the facility is safe and ready for operations.

We appreciate the continued patience of Skagway residents, travelers, and our Alaska Marine Highway System customers as crews work safely and efficiently to restore the terminal.

Skagway Ferry Terminal Repair Update (August 31, 2026)

Repair work at the Skagway Ferry Terminal continues to advance on both the marine and landside components of the facility.

Crews are actively working to replace and install anchor chains for the terminal float. As work progresses, each of the existing chains inspected to date has been found to be compromised, reinforcing the need for the ongoing replacement work.

On the landside, the concrete pour for the repaired abutment has been completed. The new concrete is now undergoing the required curing process before additional work can proceed.

Once the concrete has achieved the necessary strength and the anchor-chain work is complete, crews will move into the next phase of reassembling the terminal infrastructure. DOT&PF continues to advance the work as quickly and safely as conditions allow and will provide additional updates as repairs progress.

August 27, 2026 - Skagway Ferry Terminal Update

Repair work continues to move forward at the Skagway Ferry Terminal.

Concrete placement at the damaged abutment is anticipated as early as Saturday. Crews are also scheduled to begin installation of the new anchor chains this weekend.

Once the new chains are installed, we expect to have a better understanding of the float’s movement and stability and will provide additional updates as work progresses. We are hoping to provide another update Monday evening.

Attention AMHS travelers: Due to recently discovered pile damage, at the City of Cold Bay Dock, the following operational restrictions are required:

A maximum vehicle weight of 7,000 lbs.
A maximum axle load of 3,500 lbs.
A limit of one vehicle permitted on the approach trestle at any given time.
No vessels permitted to moor along the approach trestle.

These measures will allow continued use until the dock's previous capacity can be safely restored.

Skagway AMHS Vehicle and Passenger Ferry Operations Update: August 24, 2026

Emergency repair work at the Skagway Ferry Terminal is moving forward. AMHS service to and from Skagway, including existing bookings, is on hold until a new date can be confirmed. Bookings are currently blocked through September 14. That reflects the reservation system only, not a projected return to service, and the block will be adjusted as the repair timeline becomes clearer.

Both the vehicle and pedestrian transfer bridges have been removed and damaged concrete has been cleared so crews could fully assess the condition of the abutment. Engineering work is underway and nearing completion, after which the contractor will begin repairs. Adjustments to the float system are also planned to better control movement and reduce the potential for similar damage.

The terminal will remain closed to AMHS vehicle and passenger operations while repairs are completed. A reopening date has not yet been established.

Private passenger ferry operators continue to provide supplemental service. Walk-on passengers traveling to Skagway can use the Haines Skagway Fast Ferry: https://www.hainesskagwayfastferry.com/

Booking online is the fastest way to reserve, and travelers should book ahead as space is limited.

Travelers with vehicles may drive between Skagway and Haines through Canada and connect with AMHS service in Haines. Review Canadian border-crossing requirements and allow additional travel time.
