We had some very special visitors while on tour yesterday June 29th. What a treat for our guests who were at the shop getting into their wetsuits while we spotted the pod out front. And they were heading right for snorkeling site at Mountain Point! Might need to zoom in here.

Atta boy Hendrik! My cousin all the way from Australia pulling in the 5 star reviews!!!

What a unique experience! My teenagers were quite apprehensive when I told them I had booked this for us during our port stop in Ketchikan, but boy did they change their tune when we were done! They were mainly worried about being cold and it wasn't an issue at all with the wonderful wetsuits we were outfitted with. Fred and Hendo were amazing guides and made me feel so comfortable. They were super patient with me when I got a bit nervous at times and never made me feel self-conscious, just continuously encouraged me and cheered me on!

Another 5 Star Review on Trip Advisor! Way to Kriph and Alex!

Snorkel Alaska – An Unforgettable Experience!
Tripadvisor review: Snorkel Alaska
Snorkeling in Alaska was an experience I’ll never forget! The guides—Alex, Fred, and Kriff—were absolutely fantastic. Not only were they super fun and friendly, but they were also incredibly knowledgeable about the tides, marine life, and the unique underwater ecosystem of the area. We saw a wide variety of sea life including colorful sea urchins, massive starfish, and sea cucumbers. Even with a bit of rough water, the entire adventure felt safe, exciting, and truly one of a kind. It was both fun and educational, which made it even more memorable. If you're in Alaska and looking for something adventurous and different, I highly recommend Snorkel Alaska. You'll come away with great memories and a newfound appreciation for what lies beneath the surface!

Setting up the shop for Sunday Service @ O Dark Thirty. The ocean is our church!

Our 1:00pm tour on 6/12/25 had a very close encounter with 4 Humpback Whales! One of them even surfaced some 10' away from them and they all felt the wave it created! One of them then bubble net lunged a little farther. I was already near the exit area so a little far to capture the detail with the GoPro set on super wide angle. But here's a little taste. Might need a big screen or zoom in.

Introducing Alexandra! She's our newest tour guide and also a first time snorkeler! So excited to be adding more local talent to our line up of fun loving Snorkeling Tour Guides!

The newest addition to team Snorkel Alaska is Alex. She was born and raised right here in Ketchikan, Alaska. Alex says she has always felt a deep connection to the ocean. As a child she spent countless hours exploring tide pools, playing with bullheads and limpets and always eagerly waiting for low tide. The coastline has been her playground from an early age and marine life sparked her imagination right from the start. As life moved forward Alex drifted away from that childhood passion. This year everything changed when she went out on her first snorkel tour with Snorkel Alaska. Being in the water face-to-face with the incredible life beneath the surface reignited that spark. It reminded Alex of the joy and curiosity she felt growing up here. She is beyond thrilled to reconnect with the ocean in a whole new way and to share that experience with others exploring the wild and vast beauty of Alaska’s marine world.

It's Friday and here's Melody!

Melody was born and raised right here in Ketchikan. We always love having some local talent here at Snorkel Alaska. She grew up snorkeling in the waters surrounding Ketchikan and performing in the local theater. Melody obtained her PADI Open SCUBA certification two years ago through the local dive shop Wind & Water SCUBA and Charters. She was trained to dive in a Dry Suit, but she’s been snorkeling for as long as she can remember. As a child she used to hate wearing a wetsuit, but was forced to wear one because her mother did not want her to get hyperthermia when she went in the water for long periods of time. She grew used to the wetsuit and now loves how she can go both swimming and snorkeling in the colder weather and waters here in Ketchikan. Melody also offers childcare and pet sitting services in addition to her roles with First City Players. She also studied Welding at the University of Southeast Alaska, Ketchikan. This is Melody’s first season guided for Snorkel Alaska, and she fits right in.

Tuesday was "Take the Guides Fishing" day! It's not all hard work taking our guests snorkeling every day. Yesterday we only had one tour and the weather forecast was for light winds and flat calm seas. Got to take Hendo & Kriph to my favorite Halibut Hole. We're gonna need a bigger boat!

Snorkeling in Alaska???

The Mountain Point Snorkeling Adventure is available on all major cruise lines that stop in Ketchikan. Pictured above is the 2017 team of Snorkel Alaska guides and staff. Snorkel Alaska opened it’s doors in May 0f 2001 by company owner Fred Drake who always dreamed of having his own business. Fred grew up in the water and has been a PADI SCUBA Instructor for almost 30 years. His love of the ocean and SCUBA diving started on a family trip to Bermuda in 1978. That is where we obtained his PADI Open Water Diver certification from Bermuda legend, Dave McCleod. Fred attended Humboldt State University in Arcata, California where he continued is dive training and graduated with a degree in Recreation Administration. From there it was off to the high seas with a position aboard Norwegian Cruise Line as a Dive In Instructors leading cruise ship passengers on snorkeling excursions in every port of call. NCL sent it’s first ship to Alaska on 1994 and Fred along with two other Dive In staff formed the Dive In to Adventure Program which included snorkeling in Ketchikan. After 7 years of ship life, Fred settled down in Ketchikan to open Snorkel Alaska and offer snorkeling tours to all the cruise lines. 17 years later Snorkel Alaska has grown to employ 9 seasonal staff members and take thousands of people snorkeling in Alaska each year.
