🇵🇹 Fun Fact Friday: What’s with all the roosters in Portugal?

If you’ve ever visited Portugal, you’ve probably noticed roosters EVERYWHERE! On souvenirs, tiles, magnets, kitchen towels, and just about anything else you can imagine.

But why is this colorful bird such a big deal?

🐓 Meet the Galo de Barcelos (Rooster of Barcelos), one of Portugal’s most recognizable symbols!

According to a centuries-old legend, a traveler passing through the town of Barcelos was falsely accused of stealing and sentenced to hang. Desperate to prove his innocence, he pointed to a roasted rooster on the judge’s dinner table and declared that the bird would crow when he was hung, proving he was innocent.

And guess what? The rooster supposedly stood up and CROWED! The judge rushed to save the traveler, who survived, and the rooster eventually became a symbol of good luck, honesty, justice, and faith.

Today, you’ll find these brightly painted roosters all over Portugal, often decorated with colorful hearts and flowers.

🇮🇹 Some places are beautiful. Others stay with you. Assisi was one of those places for me.

Today, on the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi and the 800th anniversary of his death, I’m thinking back to my visit last year.

I didn’t know what to expect from Assisi, but this peaceful medieval hilltop town completely captured me.

Inside the Basilica of St. Francis, incredible frescoes tell the story of his life, and in the lower church you can visit his tomb and even see one of the robes he wore during his lifetime.

It’s moments like this that remind me why I love travel so much. You can read about history, but standing where it actually happened is something entirely different.

Assisi may not be the first stop you think of when planning Italy, but maybe it should be. 💚🤍❤️

If Italy is calling your name, let’s make sure your trip includes more than just the obvious stops.

There's just something about a new month that makes me want to open the calendar and start planning my next escape. And if that escape happens to include crisp air, fall colors, pumpkins, cozy European streets, and a little spooky-season magic? Even better. 👻

I almost MISSED MY FLIGHT HOME FROM EUROPE last week. 😳✈️

The culprit? The new Entry/Exit System (EES).

EES is Europe’s new digital border system for non-EU travelers, including Americans. It electronically records your entry and exit and uses biometric information like your facial image and fingerprints.

Sounds efficient, right? In theory.

Right now, the new process can mean LONG lines at passport control, including when you’re leaving Europe.

🤦🏻‍♀️ Ask me how I know.

It took 90 minutes to get through passport control when I arrived in Barcelona two weeks ago. Last week when I was flying home from Lisbon I came WAY too close for comfort to missing my flight because of the EES line.

So learn from my near-disaster:

✈️ Give yourself MORE airport time than usual. Three hours may not be enough right now.

✈️ Security and passport control are two different things. Clearing security does NOT mean you’re home free.

✈️ Don’t stop to shop or grab that last pastel de nata until you know what the passport-control line looks like. (cough cough… guilty as charged 🫣)

✈️ Factor in extra time to process your VAT refunds. (sadly I ran out of time)

✈️ Check your airport before you go. Wait times can vary considerably.

Hopefully EES will eventually make border crossings easier. But right now?

🔥 It can be a HOT MESS. 🔥

No dragging your suitcase through hotel lobbies.
No wrestling it on and off the bus.
No hauling it up to your room after a long day of sightseeing.

You just walk into your next hotel room and there it is waiting for you. 🙌

It may sound like a small thing, but when you’re moving between several cities on a guided tour, this is the kind of convenience that makes a BIG difference.

When you board your the ship, your first instinct might be to head straight to the buffet with everyone else.

Here’s my tip: DON’T. 😉

Instead, check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app once you’re connected to the ship’s Wi-Fi and see which restaurant is serving a sit-down lunch that day.

🍽️ You’ll be seated at a table
😌 It’s usually a much calmer way to start your cruise
🧳 No wandering around the busy buffet with your carry-ons
✨ And you can officially start vacation mode while someone brings the food to YOU.

But perhaps the most important reason of all…

🍨 THE WELCOME ABOARD SUNDAE!

The sit-down embarkation lunch is the ONLY time and place where you can get this yummy sundae. Can’t think of a better way to celebrate the start of a cruise than with ice cream! 😋

PRO TIP: The restaurant serving lunch can vary, so don’t assume you know where to go. Check the Navigator app once onboard for the location and serving hours.

I did this on my Disney cruise last month and it’s now become my new tradition over fighting the embarkation-day buffet crowds!

✔️ Check in before your flight
✔️ Access your boarding pass
✔️ Get instant gate change and delay notifications
✔️ Rebook faster if travel plans change

It’s one of those simple things you’ll be glad you did when travel doesn’t go exactly as planned.
