The GREAT ESCAPE name and logo pays homage to our Grandfather who was a WWll POW bunkmate with Paul Brickhill, the author of the bestselling book and movie titled “The Great Escape”. While piloting a B-24 Bomber, our Grandfather’s plane came under attack and was shot down from 27,000 feet approximately 35 miles West of Budapest Hungary. As the plane was spiraling to the ground while wrapped in flames, he managed to escape through the top hatch with burns over half of his body. He parachuted to a field where a group of farmers with pitchforks immediately turned him over to the German Army. In his Wartime Log, he spent much of the time thinking about his family and dreaming of the day he could be with them. Since our earliest memories, our grandparents possessed a vacation home for the family to come together and create lasting memories.
