The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority (FKAA) is conducting a multi-year water main project coordinated with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) that is currently creating significant U.S. 1 traffic congestion in Tavernier with two-hour delays and five-mile back-ups in both directions. The traffic management plan implemented by the FKAA and its contractor was approved by FDOT. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was not involved in that traffic management plan.
“This is frustrating for our citizens who have to sit and wait in traffic as does the Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “The traffic situation is adversely affecting the public safety response for police, fire, and rescue. I have expressed these concerns with FDOT and the FKAA.”
The Sheriff’s Office has been inundated with calls, questions, and concerns from residents and tourists.
Please do not call 911 as those inquiries tie up lines reserved for emergencies.
