Know Your Buoys!

Did you take ‘Buoy 101’ as part of your college curriculum? Don’t worry, I didn’t either. I bet that 99.9% of average Joes and 99.8% of fisherman couldn’t tell you the meaning of every single color, shape, size, number, letter, lit or unlit buoy is either! 🙂 BUT if your interested, here’s a chart I found titled ‘Know Your Buoys’ that’ll explain ANYTHING & EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know and MORE about buoys! (WOW… I bet you’re really fired up to read it now) 🙂

Highlights’ Magazines Hidden Picture Puzzle?

Remember those Doctors Office magazines named Highlights’ with the famous ‘Hidden Picture Puzzle’ page in them that you use to pick up and try to find all of the items somewhere in the picture. Today’s my version of the same here in Key West.

Is this simply a mural painted on a brick wall of a gazebos, palm tree and pelicans… or is there more? Look close, real close… no, even closer than that! There! You see it? OK, I’ll spell it our for you, can you find this buildings office door in the photo? Believe it or not, it’s an exterior door to this office building which if I recall is a Real Estate Office. To find where the doorknob would be look no further than where the pelicans butts meet and pray that it’s not covered with pelican p**p. In all honesty, the hidden door is well disguised and is pretty cool to tell you the truth!

Though I’m not sure of the business occupying this facility, I’m 100% sure of its location for your intriguing viewing pleasure. You can find this ‘Hidden Doorway Mural’ at the corner of Bertha Street & Flagler Avenue here in the sunshine capital of the Keys.

What The Heck Is A Conch?

ARE YOU A CONCH? I AM! I know what some of you are thinking: “What the HECK is a “Conch” and where did the name come from? I’m here to straighten you out and get you caught up to date on the entire lingo associated with the referral of different categories of Key West residents.

Here we go so hang on tight and make sure your pocket change doesn’t fall out when upside down! 🙂 Rule #1: No it’s not named directly after the shell & meat out of the shell of the same name conch. Here’s the p**p on CONCHS – Many of the early residents of Key West were immigrants from the Bahamas known then as Conchs (pronounced ‘conks’), who arrived in increasing numbers after 1830. The true original meaning of Conch applies only to someone with European ancestry who immigrated from the Bahamas. In the 20th century many residents of Key West started referring to themselves as “Conchs”, and the term is now generally applied to all residents of Key West. However, some residents use the term “Conch” to refer to a person born in Key West, while the term “Freshwater Conch” refers to a resident not born in Key West but who has lived in Key West for seven years or more… until your 7 year coronation, your simply known as a TOURIST WHO STAYED! 🙂 Many of the Bahamian immigrants live in an area of Old Town next to the Truman Annex called “Bahama Village”.

In the days to come you’ll be enlightened on why and how it became known as the “Conch Republic” which believe it or not ONLY came about during the 1980’s! It’s an awesome story so set your VCR’s on record! 🙂

Dam Nice Picture!

Dam… or is it Damn? 🙂 I’ve been here twice now and have yet to see a soul in sight! Yep, I was the ONLY person each time… that is unless you count the 158,314 mosquitos that were swarming around me as I was trying to take these photos.

Though I’m not sure exactly what they call this, it’s not your typical dam, I am sure that it’s some kind of water flow control structure that makes for a very different type of Florida Keys photo and is an incredible sight to see up close. (seen below)

You can find the ‘Damn of a Dam’ in a little known boat ramp of a park (with no facilities) at Mile Marker 116.4 on the left side of US-1 South beneath the overpass to the right on what is commonly called the “18-Mile Stretch”.

Escaping Key West’s Heat!

Escaping the heat in Key West has been sought out by most everyone upon their visit. A practice that’s been mastered by us with brains and ignored by those without… you know, those ruby-red sunburnt bodies seen walking up and down Duval Street… ouch, that’s gotta hurt! Haven’t they ever heard of sunscreen? 🙂

Escaping the heat is evidently more than a human thing! Seen here are birds seeking out the refuge of the shade provided from a street lamp. I for one have NEVER seen birds do this and thought you too might be amused at this birds-of-a-feather flocking together in the shade photograph.

This spectacular view (minus the birds) can be found at the majestic eye-popping White Street Pier in Key West.

Key West’s Post Office 3-Wheel Cycle!

What a strange sight this was to say the least! I actually passed her, drove around the block and pulled in front of her one block ahead as I pulled out my camera and asked her if I could take a picture. She said “Sure” as she posed for me and said that many tourists ask her to do the same on a daily basis. It’s too cool and hopefully on your next visit to Key West that you may have an opportunity to see the U.S. Post Office’s 3-wheeled cycle.

Lorelei… Giant Mermaid or Siren?

Hey, is that Daryl Hannah from the movie ‘Splash”? :-) Sorry guys NO it’s not, but if you want to see the largest mermaid / siren in the Key’s well here it is! Her name is Lorelei which means ‘Murmuring Rock’ in a combined German & Celtic translation. (similar to the noise a mountain stream makes over pebbles in the riverbed but 1,000 times louder)

According to myth and lore, Lorelei was a beautiful enticing siren that lured sailors from the sea towards her with an enchanting sound that would lead them to their demise. This legend can trace Lorelei to a real place in history, on the Rhine River in Germany there is a rock named Lorelei (pictured below taken from Wikipedia) that is the birthplace of the legend. Here’s the lore: Lorelei is falsely accused of maliciously bewitching men and driving them to ruin; later pardoned and on the way to a nunnery she passes and climbs the Lorelei rock, watching out for the lover who abandoned her, and falls to her death; the rock still retained an echo of her name afterwards. Amazing the things you can learn from a FREE daily BLOG! :-)

Now here’s where to find this enchanting 20′ tall mermaid / siren of the Keys. Go to Mile Marker 82.0 US-1 bayside and there she will be at the Lorelei Restaurant & Cabana Bar. She is kind of hot and sexy though isn’t she guys, I asked her out once and all I got was a murmuring sound! It was probably for the best, I would’ve felt kind of awkward taking her to a fish fry! :-)

A Scuba Shark From Sharknado?

One of the ODDEST and most unnatural looking sights in the entire Florida Keys! To prove it, just check out the shark with its own scuba mask, respirator, air tanks and weight belt. Too Funny!

On second thought, it reminds me of the ongoing SyFy original movie saga ‘Sharknado’ where tornadoes filled with sharks follow a family wherever they go… and that’s been thru 5 movies in 5 years so far! By the way, have you ever noticed how the character’s first names reference shark body parts: Fin Shepard & Gil Shepard. 🙂

Key West’s Shell Car!

I thought I’d seen everything before… that’s until we ran across this! While riding our bikes around town we stumbled upon this capturing our attention and obviously made us laugh. This shell car is covered with all shapes of shells on all sides of the car, roof, doors, hood, trunk, side panels and now making its way to the bumpers. I’ve seen cars in the past with spoons, forks and others adornments covering their rides but this shell car is the first I’ve seen in Key West. I wonder what brand of gasoline they use… hmmm, maybe Shell? 🙂

Key West’s AIDS Memorial!

Key West’s AIDS Memorial

The White Street AIDS Memorial was dedicated on World AIDS Day, December 1, 1997. It was built with private funds and then donated to the City of Key West and maintained as a park. At the time of dedication, 730 names were included in random order. In succeeding years, additional names have been added. Key West, with a population of about 25,000 residents, has been especially hard-hit by the AIDS plague. There are now more than 1,000 names engraved on the Memorial.

The Key West AIDS Memorial is a tribute to the people who have died of AIDS, their names are inscribed on flat granite monuments which are embedded in the walkway approaching White Street Pier at the Atlantic Ocean. The real tragedy is the individual saga behind every single name on this list, the suffering to each person, their friends, and their families each had to endure. The White Street memorial has a capacity to commemorate over 1,500 souls. Additional names will be engraved yearly, and dedicated on World AIDS Day, December 1st. I encouraged you to visit the memorial, it’s designed as a quiet peaceful resting area overlooking the splendor of the Atlantic Ocean. Along with the list of names engraved in granite, three poems are also set in stone.
