August Fishing Report from Key West
August was a warm one, with both air and water temperatures reaching into the 90s.
Inshore: We had a consistent bite of healthy and tasty mangrove and schoolmaster snapper, along with a few jumbo inshore muttons. Sharks and barracudas were around, luckily for most, they were not as active in the warm, shallow water. Some guests took advantage of the warm conditions and jumped in to try their luck lobstering while snorkeling.
Reef: We had some excellent trips to the reef, although the late month ripping full moon current made it nearly unfishable on a few trips. Yellowtail snapper, grouper, mutton snapper, triggerfish, and spadefish all found their way onto the fish taco menu.
Offshore: The offshore bite was a little tough, but with patience and flexibility, we were still able to put our guests on fish. Those willing to troll or cruise around searching for birds found a few mahi and wahoo. We also located several schools of cero mackerel and were able to capitalize, with a few bonito mixed in.
One of the month’s highlights was neighboring boat hooked and landed a blue marlin. We near them and within VHF range, so listened to the entire play by play! Pretty work boys!
Overall, August was busy and the fish gods made us work for it at times, but there were still plenty of good fish, great meals, and memorable days on the water.
