What a lovely family, such a pleasure to take them on my tour. Mom and dad and the four daughters, they’re all crouching down so I don’t look so short. Here we are at the garden club where I cracked open some almonds and we walked the labyrinth and then had our percussion jam in the gazebo. They had a good time.

Every year at this time I take a group of school kids from the gulf coast academy school in Spring Hill Florida. They are 13 year olds. I’m always impressed with their open minded attitude and willingness to connect with nature. Lucuma the magic fruit also known as a Canistel or the egg fruit is quickly vanishing from Key West like many fruit trees. Some are destroyed by storms but many are cut down by the new homeowners who don’t want fruit trees on their property. I have witnessed the suburbanization of key west. Plant a fruit tree today and help keep the charm of key west alive.

If you look up the description of a bike I’m not there. It’s more like hanging out with Lloyd on a botanical bike ride and stopping 20 times to taste all kinds of tropical fruit, sample the aroma of exotic flowers and spices, drinking and eating fresh coconut, listening to jokes and stories about the old Key West, rolling past famous writers houses, meeting real locals, and even having an impromptu percussion session in a gazebo overlooking the ocean in a botanical garden inside a civil war fort.
