🌴🇺🇸 This Memorial Day, as we remember those who have courageously given their lives, we at Key West Vacation Reviews also pause to honor their memory. Our office will be closed this Monday to reflect on their sacrifices and the freedoms they protected.

We hope everyone takes a moment this weekend to remember our heroes, and we look forward to sharing more beautiful Key West adventures with you when we return on Tuesday. Have a peaceful and reflective Memorial Day weekend!

The docks on Loggerhead and Garden Keys are damaged and will remain inaccessible to the ferry and private vessels through at least Thursday, October 6. Sea plane tours have resumed. Contact Yankee Freedom ferry or Key West Seaplane Adventures for more information.

Starry night skies and natural darkness are important components of national parks, which hold some of the last remaining harbors of darkness and provide an excellent opportunity for the public to experience this endangered resource. Dry Tortugas National Park is dedicated to protecting and sharing its nighttime skies for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

On This Day: July 20th, 1985.
“TODAY’S THE DAY!” That was the phrase Mel Fisher used to tell his dive crew every day, for 16 years, while he led them on a search through the waters off Key West, Florida for the elusive Spanish galleon, Nuestra Senora de Atocha. Atocha was the Almiranta (rear guard ship) of the 1622 Treasure Fleet, which left Havana several weeks late, causing them to run into the jaws of a hurricane on September 6, 1622. Eight ships of the 28-ship fleet were lost, wrecked on the reefs between the Dry Tortugas and present-day Key West. The wreck itself was scattered after another hurricane hit the site exactly one month later, so the Spanish were never able to salvage what was one of the richest galleons ever to sail.

No human eyes saw the treasure again, until Mel Fisher began to pick up pieces of her precious cargo in 1971. But Atocha’s “Motherload” still eluded the salvors. Then, on July 20th, 1985, Mel Fisher’s words rang true! Fisher and his crew discovered the King’s ransom, a $400 million cache of Atocha treasure and artifacts.
