Happy Missouri Day! The third Wednesday of October celebrates our state's history and the achievements of Missourians.

This year we recognize Maxwell Taylor. Born in Keytesville, MO, Maxwell became a senior United States Army officer and diplomat. He served with distinction in World War II, most notably as commander of the 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed "The Screaming Eagles." After the war, he was appointed by President John F. Kennedy as the fifth chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He spoke at least 7 languages fluently and was the author of numerous books.

Today, Maxwell Taylor Park in Keytesville features an impressive memorial with information about his personal and military achievements. The park also offers several amenities, including shelter houses, picnic tables, playground and exercise equipment, RV hookups, a fishing lake as well as areas for both baseball and basketball.

The Community Art Players have been providing quality community theatre in Chariton County since 2013, and this fall is the perfect chance to experience their local talent and creativity!They'll be performing "Christmas in Comfort" by Faye Couch Reeves and "The Living Nativity" by Karen Jones at The Balcony Ballroom on November 6-8. In October of 1838, the Potawatomi Indians passed through our region during the tragic Trail of Death — a forced relocation that crossed what is now Chariton County.

Historical markers throughout our area serve as solemn reminders of their journey and a tribute to the enduring presence and cultural impact of Native Americans on our communities.
